wedding dress: rent or buy?

Original post by honeybee

how much did you spend on your wedding dress and what label is it? or if you haven't bought it yet... how much do you expect to spend?

seems like all the dresses i like are quite pricey, and i don't care about keeping the dress so i'm considering renting.

what do you all think? good? bad?

thanks for your help!

I thought about the same question. I went and looked at some Asian Wedding Photography/Centers that provide wedding services. They do rent out gowns so if you can't find any to rent in LI, you can try Fushing, Queens.

Here are some address I found (Their addresses can be found in the links):

Wedding Box

True Love Wedding Center

I know it's stupid, but I wouldn't want to rent. You never know who wore the dress before you! I've crossed reception halls off my list because the people I know who got married there were divorced..maybe I
'm just superstitious. You may be able to find a gown inexpensive enough! Also, David's Bridal has a $99 wedding gown sale every year.

I'm in theatre..we alter the same things over and over and over again. it can be done. If it's a rental, they'll leave the fabric if they take something in so they can take it out again!

I bought mine on ebay for about $200. It looks fine but it'll need the hem altered and a bustle. I plan on selling it after I'm done with it. I feel so unsentimental!!!

i bought my dress for $924.00 that includes tax, alterations, bustle, veil and tiara. i personally wouldn't rent a dress because it's a keepsake, but it's really up to you and how you feel about it. you dont have to spend a lot on a dress. check out the online bridal shops like bridesave and also check davids bridal.

my mom bought it for me and it came to like $900. we got it at macys bridal. personally i wanted to keep my dress because later on i could either offer it to my daughter or have the baptismal outfit made out of the fabric, you could even have part of your daughters dress made out of fabric from yours. thats if you have a daughter i thnk you should do what feels right to you. I believe in all the bad karma stuff also so i wanted my own dress.

My mom and my grandma made my dress, so of course I'm keeping it, but I think I would have bought it as well. Maybe on eBay, from one of the bridal shops that are going out of business or from SasaBridal.com in China, but I would have bought it.

I have not even tried on dresses yet, but I feel the same way as you do. It doesn't matter to me if I keep the dress, my wedding is informal. Many friends have offered for me to wear their dresses, and if they fit I'm definitely going to consider it. I even considered wearing an ivory bridesmaid dress. I'm am too cheap to spend money on a dress I will wear once. Def. check out Bridesave.com and Houseofbrides.com

I with you! I have a $500 max budget on the dress not including alterations. I also have my mom's crown from her wedding so all I need is the veil. Ebay has them(even the really expensive silk chiffon ones for under $40). I have found some really nice dresses for under 500(but that is here is California where they are cheaper)

I have yet to see a rental wedding gown that doesn't look like something Scarlett O'Hara wore in Gone With the Wind.....

Re: wedding dress: rent or buy?

thanks for all the help! i'd ideally like to buy, but i really don't want to keep the dress after the wedding. it'll just take up closet space and it'll be a ***** to keep clean.

i am going to check out kleinfelds in brooklyn. anyone know what they price range of their dresses are? do they have a good selection?

i think the most i'd want to pay for a dress is $2000 not including veil, alterations, shoes, etc. can you give me suggestions for lines that are in this price range?
