Wedding Flower Help-Gerber Brides should read this
Ok so i need help..I feel like this topic has been the biggest pain in my hoo-haw throughout the wedding planning: flowers.
Originally we wanted gerbers but after seeing how quickly they died when out of a water source I nixed the idea. Lats night was my best friend's shower and we took them out of water for a game we played for maybe 15 minutes tops and by the end they had started to curl. This was in an AC room, not a hot one, which is what the 4 florists I have spoken to have told me makes gerbers wilt quickly. Sooo late July heat will probably make them curl unless they have a water source. All the florists I spoke to want to charge us between 70 and 85 dollars for a bo-k of 5 gerbers! CRAZY! We were going to do hand-picked bo-ks but after seeing what can happen to them out of water, had to nix that idea. So now this is our new dilemna...
If we have to pay a florist for bok's, should we suck it up and stay with gerbers which is our main theme, or just buy heartier flowers like dahlias or roses in our colors and hand tie our own? Please vote! Choice #1: Dahlia bo-k's for BM's: They would be in colors of our theme but hand tied like these
Choice #2 for BM's-red orange and pink rose bo'ks Some of these I posted for color but they are all the basic idea of roses and maybe some greenery
Choice#3 for BM's: Stick to our original gerber bo-k idea and suck up the obscene cost.
OR anyone have another idea? please post pics and suggestions if you do.

I would go with the roses because they are a heartier flower. You might also want to think of calla lillies. When my cousin got married, she had calla lillies as her boq and her wedding was in July on a golf course and her flowers stayed. If I can find a picture I will post it for you.

I'm using all Gerber daisies for my bo-k's. I love the way they look. If you're worried about them wilting you can have small water viles put on the stems and wrapped so you don't see them. I don't know what florists you've spoken with but my bo-k will be 5 daisies and only about $25. I'm using a small, local florist.

We have the same colors...
I think that amount they are charging is absurd for 5 stems..
I choose dahlias because they are sturdier and looked similar to Gerbers.I might be doing a Dahlia/Rose mix for my BM's BoK's

Thanks guys. These guys are a local florist but it's really obscene. They will sell us 5 flowers for 2 bucks apiece but their 'labor' is apparently worth 85 bucks. Hence why we looked into doing it ourselves. Does anyone know of any local florists in New Jersey? I know its a long shot but thought I'd ask. TIA.

i really want gerber daisies. i haven't started looking at florists yet, b/c i'm an '08er, so i don't have any advice from a florist. but i have read that gerber daisies tend to last longer. and i had a few in a bouquet i had at my house and the 3 in there lasted over a week without wilting. i'm not saying that what you said isn't true, but maybe they were just bad flowers or had been out before you even got them? i don't know...i like the roses though and the pink and orange combo. good luck! let us know what happens b/c i want to know before my heart gets totally set on them! (though it already is close to being set!)

I am doing gerbera daisy bo-q's. I got a sample a few weeks ago and left it out of water ALL day and it was a very warm day and it did fine. I'm not sure why your florist is charging so much??? Our florist charges $5/ flower. BM boquet 7-8 fowers. Bride boquet 10-12 flowers

I am doing gerber daisies. I think she wraps something under the stem wrap that keeps them moist.

In water they last awhile-its out of water bo-ks that are the issue. I don't know guys-I know girls say they work out but every experienced florist I have spoken to says they may do well but if they don't, don't be surprised. I could understand if one or two wilted but to have all 70 of them wilt seems a bad sign to me. We;ll see what happens.

Thanks Shelby-did they have a water source or just hand wrapped with bare stems?

My favorite flower is the gerber daisy. I'm surprised to hear they wilt so easily. I've never experienced that problem & my FH has given me so many throughout our 5 year together. They suffer through the insane heat in my 2nd floor apartment as well as my over powering ac. At the moment I have a pink dozen which is still looking great and I got them on 6/6. Would you consider a combo of daisy & dahlias?

Totally would but my fear is using them OUT of water. I know they last well in water-have them here now but OUT of water they wilt in my experience. Anyone use them for their wedding without a water source and did they last?

I posted up above. I am using them for my wedding. My florist said they would do fine and he gave me a sample to show me. I left it out of water all day 14+ hours on a very warm day and it was fine. It is a hand tied bo-q. If you put it in water when your not using it, it will last longer.

I like the idea of dahlias, but I'm not sure how long they last. BUT, they feel more similar to gerbera daisies to me than roses, so you're not sacrificing as much!

if you really want gerbs heres what you can do. ask your florist to make your bouquet with water tubes on the bottom of the flowers. have them cut the stems a few inches shorter than normal and have them wrap the entire bouquet - no stems hanging out the bottom. this SHOULD work if the bouquet is made right before and they arent outside in the sun. FM me if you want more info.

An idea right be use mostly roses in your color But still throw in a few Gerber daisies, maybe even silk ones. I have seen several pics of bo-k like that just a suggestion. Good Luck!
