Wedding Gift Advice

Wedding Gift Advice

FH and I are going to his friends wedding at Fox Hollow on October 27th.

FH said that he wants to give the couple $100.00 cash as their wedding gift. I told him that I feel that $200.00 was enough and they know that we're on a budget since we're getting married in March (his friend is invited with his wife to our wedding).

My question is - is $200 the norm or is $100 enough to give the happy couple? Is FH being stingy?

Re: Wedding Gift Advice

Knowing what a wedding costs, I personally give $300 to the couple depending on how close they are to me. Use your judgement. Do you feel this couple would reciprocate well at your wedding?
Have they given you generous gifts at other occassions before? When shopping for my wedding hall, I'm finding out that $100 nowadays does not even cover a plate.

IMO- you should give at LEAST $200!!!! You especially, since you know what a wedding costs!! $200 prob isn't even covering the costs of your plates!! I think $100 is WAY too little! Even $200 is cutting it close to be too little! JMO!

They haven't really given us any kind of gifts.. I know that they are paying about $100 per plate but I'm not trying to be cheap but I'm also unsure if they are going to reciprocate.

I just wanted to make sure that FH are doing the right thing in giving them at least $200.00

I totally agree with the previous posters.

$200 would be ok for an OOT wedding, but not here on LI .....

I love them but I can't see giving them more than probably $150.00 knowing that we need to start paying for things for our wedding.

Most people reciprocate what you gave!!

That's what I was thinking - that $200 is the very least we can do .. I know they're great people and I know they will do in kind when our wedding comes around.

I totally understand. We are all in the same situation. I just feel that what goes around, comes around, and if I give someone a 'cheap gift' they will remember that at the next party of mine & possibly give an even cheaper gift. LOL

P.S. I heard a coworker of mine say at her wedding, a family of THREE gave a $50 gift card to TARGET!!! AAAAAAhhhh.. NOt even Fortunoff!!!!

Same here... at least $200, but I've given $250 at the last few weddings I've been to.

I think $200 is plenty. You want to givearound what they are paying per plate but I feel that if they have $$ and paying $200 a plate, that doesn't mean you are made of money.

I may sound cheap, but my mother always said 'How hard to you have to work for $----?'

I third this! We give a minimum of $300 - I feel like that's the new standard.

If you aren't that close with them, I think $200 is fine.

Did they also have an engagement party & bridal shower? If so, what did you give them then?

I know for my fiances cousin's engagement party we gave $150. So for the wedding we may just give like $250-$300. Whereas, if we would have given them something a little cheaper at the Engagement Party we might have given more at the wedding. I would give $200 to at least cover your plates.....and then if you want to give a little more go for $300.

Spend what you can afford and feel comfortable giving.

FTR, the most recent edition of Emily Post discourages use of the 'per plate' method, instead suggesting that your personal financial circumstances and your relationship to the couple as a guide.

I think $200 is a nice gift. We usually give 250-300-we have given more to closer friends and family but I think 200 is a nice gift especially since you are planning your own wedding.

Re: Wedding Gift Advice

we recently went to a beautiful wedding in albany, and we gave $200 even though we really couldn't afford it along w/ hotels, etc. i always give at least $100pp because i know what weddings cost and i don't think the couple should have to put themselves in the hole to throw a fabulous party when its the couple's happy day everyone's supposed to be celebrating.

$200 is def ok, but if you go w/ fh's plan, you may regret it when your wedding comes around, imho.
