Wedding gown budget

Original post by Karen62794

Hello All,

Just wondering what each of you were paying for your wedding gowns.

I'm torn between 2 gowns, a $708 Private Label gown and a $2,500 Scaasi gown. Big price difference between the two, but I can't make up my mind.

I wasn't sure if $2,500 was a lot to spend on just the dress. I still need a headpiece, veil, shoes, etc.

Thanks ladies!

Re: Wedding gown budget

when I said I couldn't see spending more than $500, I meant for myself. I hope I didn't offend anyone, it's just for me. Everyone should do what makes them happy, it is your day!!!!!!

Just one aside....In newsday the other day there was a picture of a wedding cake. Underneath is said 'your are looking at a down payment for a house.' They said the typical Long Island wedding averages $34,000. It is really sad that young couples can't afford to buy their own homes here, and sad that they are forced to pay so much for their wedding day. But if you love Long Island, that's what you are up against...Best to you all

You are absolutely right bearsbabe. If you have the thousands to spend on a dress good for you. No need to have a nasty comment about how you would never wear polyester on your wedding day.

Re: Wedding gown budget

Why is it okay for someone to say that its ridiculous to spend so much on a dress but NOT okay to say that I would never wear polyesther on my wedding day?

By the way - my polyesther post was mostly written to make everyone realize that its goes both ways. Generally a cheaper dress is made of cheaper materials - my comment was not directly at you in particular.

Its true that some would not spend so much just as some would not wear polyesther.

Why is it only okay to post negatively about brides with larger budgets?

My first dress was a Mori Lee which was $800 (I got it from Saymels). My second dress will probably cost about 3,000 with alternations. It is a Scassi.

Can't we all just get along.....

Spend whatever you want on a dress. the post was asking for $ so here goes..$2800 on my dress and I absolutley love it and I absolutely can't afford it...but who cares!

I do have to agree with Sonicstef...I find that if you spend alot on something you are more likely to get criticized than if you got some great deal. We can't fault brides who are fortunate enough to have a larger budget.

Good luck everyone...and be secure enough in your decision to spend what you spend...be it $300 or $3000!

Re: Wedding gown budget

If you think spending thousands on a dress makes you look better or more elegant than other brides you are wrong. Honestly, unless you go around telling your guests how much your dress cost they would not know the difference.

Why are you getting so defensive? Nobody was putting you down. Some people can't afford to spend that much money on a dress, and others choose not to spend that much money on a dress. TO EACH HER OWN. There was no need to make that comment. You make it sound as if you don't spend over 2 grand on a dress, the dress is crap. That wasn't nice.

Like I said before, if you have the money to spend, more power to you and go ahead!! Everybody is going to look gorgeous in their dress no matter how much they spent!!

By the way my dress cost $1400 without alterations.

I did NOT say that if you don't spend a lot on a dress it is crap. Please do not put words in my mouth.

YOU are the one being defensive. I don't like polyesther - is that a crime?

I think this whole thing has gotten way out of hand! The bottom line is that everyone is entitled to their own opinion! The difference is that there is a way to voice your opinion so that you do not hurt other people's feelings. I simply said in my post that I cannot afford to spend a lot of money on a wedding dress. If in some way I offended anyone, I apologize. If someone falls in love with a dress that costs $3000 and they can afford it, then GO FOR IT! Sonicstef, you could have just stated your opinion, that you feel it's ok to spend a large amount of money on a wedding dress. I think that would have been a lot less insulting to many of us. The polyesther comment was harsh.

Gee, did I cause all this trouble????

I was just asking opinions, I didn't mean for anyone to get upset over this.

Like I said earlier, as long as you love your dress, that's all that counts. Whether you spend $3, $30, $300 or $3,000 it doesn't matter as long as you love the dress.

Silk, satin, polyester or whatever, the only thing that counts is that you have a **** good marriage. The only person that will remember the dress is probably the bride. Remember why we are all doing this, not b/c of the dress or the hall or anything else, all this extra stuff is just icing on the cake. The most important thing is that we are marrying the one we love and hopefully we have many years of happy togetherness.

All the best to all

Happy planning

Well said Shamma - it's easy to get side-tracked and not always realize what's most important

Re: Wedding gown budget

I don't think that there's anything wrong with a one bride saying she wouldn't wear polyester on her wedding day. Any more so than another bride saying the opposite by stating that she would NEVER spend more than $500 on a wedding dress.
I didn't see anything catty or downcutting about Stefs remark. It was her personal opinion about how she feels about HER dress.
I wouldn't and didn't read into it as an attack on any bride that chose to spend less for whatever reason.
If one person can say 'I AGREE I WOULD NEVER SPEND SO MUCH FOR 5 HOURS! IT'S INSANITY!'
Then is that an attack on those of us who DID spend multiple thousands on our dress?
That to me is no less harsh than someone saying
'I SECOND THAT! I WOULDN'T WEAR POLYESTER!'
That being said, I don't wear polyester in my daily life, so I also would not wear it on my wedding day!
That is NOT meant to say that I think that any bride that DOES wear the $500 dress will look worse than the bride in the $5000 dress. That's just how I feel for myself. And I don't think that any bride should have to justify the cost of her dress whether it be the budget gown OR the hi-end designer gown.
As brides we are all super sensitive when it somes to any criticism about 'THE DRESS' but I read through this whole thread, and I don't think anyone meant to be hurtful.
It is not the dress that makes the bride. And I've never seen ANY bride look less than stunning, no matter what she chooses to spend.

My dress is $1300 (without alt) But unlike most of the brides I am wearing my dress twice . (Seeing that I'm getting married here in May & Ireland next October)
I feel if you love the dress that's all that matters. But I did get a huge smile on my face when I went w/ my sister yesterday to look at bridesmaids dresses & the woman asked me if I had my dress yet. I told her yes & told her the designer. She knew the dress & couldn't stop talking about how lovely it is & how well made.

Re: Wedding gown budget

my dress isn't polyester either!
sonicstef, what makes you think a less expensive dress is made of polyester???!?!! MINE ISN'T and it was $900.
I agree these posts sometimes get out of line.
everyone is entitles to post their opionon but to say about polyester!
pleaze!
not every dress under a certain amount is made of polyester. I personally agress with bearsbabe about the way your word stuff, next time think a bit more before you type!
This is brides helping brides, not brides against brides!
