Wedding guest etiquitte

Original post by branflake1229

FH and I are going to a wedding in October at Willow Creek in Mount Sinai. FH has known the groom for a number of years and I have known him since 11th grade. FH is a groomsman in the wedding party. My question is - how much should we give as the gift? We're planning our own wedding and money is already tight, so my mom suggested $150, especially since FH is already paying to be in the wedding. Are there any guidelines for this type of thing? I always thought you're supposed to pay whatever your plate cost, but how would we know?

Never expect your gifts to 'wash'. You are friends, not banking institutions. If you are looking for a wash, give a smaller amount, so as not to make it difficult for your friends to meet your 'expected gift.'

How's that?

I usually don't take in to account how much I spent to be in the bridal party. A gift is a gift and this is probably one of your closets frieneds I would give no less than $300. My FH was just the best man and we gave $500 sine it was his best friend.

also, I know money is tight but you will probably get back exactly what you give since your wedding is coming up soon as well. It will be a wash.

I totally agree.
I personally wouldn't give less than $200, if both of you are attending.

FH and I always disagree on this. He always says we should cover our plate but I'm a believer in giving what you can. If you can only give $150 I'm sure your friend will understand. I've given between $200- $500 for weddings in the past fews years. All depended on what we were able to do at the time.

Give $150. Geez. Give what you can afford.

Everyone has different opinions. My opinion is that a wedding calls for a gift of at least 300 per couple. Anything less than that is unacceptable.

there is no perfect amount, bc everyone has different financial situations or ideas about what is right or wrong.

BUt i agree that you shouldn't take bp costs into consideration. When youre in the bp you agree to it bc its a very close friend and want to be there for them, so money shouldn't be subtracted just bc of what you spent to be in the bp.

if 150 is what you are comfortable with and what you can afford then give that. Nobody can tell you what you HAVE to give. Seems like the 150 is also what somebody else told you to give, so is that what you want to give though? Also since your fh is in the bp and its his good friend i would let him have more of a say in it. When my dh was a groomsman, he always knew what he wanted to give and i didnt tell him to do any different bc it is his friend and i dont want him to be uncomfortable with what he is giving if he had a different idea. Same with me, if its a close friend of mine, i would want to give what i want to give and not have someone else tell me to give differently.

When dh was a groomsman he gave about $500-600. For our own wedding most of our bp gave from $300-800. We had about 2 people who gave less than that and that was fine with us too. I am sure they will understand that you have a wedding to pay for too now and since his friend just went through all of that he will understand how money can be tight.

IMO i think its a little unacceptable to call a gift less than $300 unacceptable.

To the OP give what you can. $150 is perfectly fine, and I am sure your friend will completely understand. Besides, weddings are not about gifts, they are about celebrating a newly formed union. Everyone should be happy with what they get whether it be $5 of $500.

I second this. We always give at least $300. If its a VERY close friend we give $400, if we are in the wedding party or its family e give $500

same here

For a second, I was about to post the following:
'Someone's going to be really disappointed come next March.' Thank you for clarifying.

I think $150 is fine if that is what you can afford. No one invited you because of the gift. And I never ever heard of the pay per plate thing till LIweddings. LOL. I don't think most people go by that. There is no way to know what people are paying!

My personal opinion is that you give no less than $100/per guest. I usually give $250 for friends, $300+ for close friends. And I give because I can afford that.

You are planning your own wedding. I doubt anyone is going to expect you to shell out big bucks at this time.

Like someone else said, there will be plenty of opportunities to give gifts in the future.

ITA! I never take into account what I have to shell out to be in a bridal party!! You know its goingto be an expense when you say yes, so that shouldn't men anything in terms of giving a gift! I was a BM in a good friends wedding, had to fly to NY from NC, take off from work and I still gave $400 as a gift for me and my DH (FH at the time- I was also planning a wedding).

As a future bride, you know how much weddings cost- therefore $150 won't even be covering your plates! And you know that you'll be getting back what you give so its pretty much a wash then!

Re: Wedding guest etiquitte

FH and I have been going to weddings this year like it's our job (and I almost need a 2nd job to afford it). I give a gift based on how expensive I guestimate the venue to be and how close the bride and groom is to me. I recently went to a super budgeted wedding at a very innexpensive venue and we gave $200, the least I would feel comfortable giving. I almost wish we gave less because the wedding was horrible but I would have felt like it was bad karma to screw somebody at their wedding. My close friends we gave $400, regular people who im not close too at a typical venue we give $250-$300
