FH and I are going to a wedding in October at Willow Creek in Mount Sinai. FH has known the groom for a number of years and I have known him since 11th grade. FH is a groomsman in the wedding party. My question is - how much should we give as the gift? We're planning our own wedding and money is already tight, so my mom suggested $150, especially since FH is already paying to be in the wedding. Are there any guidelines for this type of thing? I always thought you're supposed to pay whatever your plate cost, but how would we know?

Good question. I never know how much is too much or too little.

Re: Wedding guest etiquitte
Wow, now I feel cheap only giving $150
Honestly though, we're paying rent every month, we have two dogs to feed, and a wedding to pay for in a little over a year. And the thing that makes me want to give less is that the groom is a little shady and only started talking to my FH a lot right before he asked him to be a groomsman. And recently he hasn't been asking to hang out or anything - kind of shady. So maybe 200 will be good.

Re: Wedding guest etiquitte
it all depends on what you can give. dont worry about guidelines. i always cover my plate and a little more ... if u dont how much your plate is i call the reception hall and ask for an estimate. we give 300-400

Re: Wedding guest etiquitte
I call the RH and ask for an estimate as soon as I get an invite this way I can budget my money for a gift if need be. And also, so I don't feel like I am skimping on a gift.
As a BM or a groomsmen when you say yes you know it's going to cost you some $$$. That's why you are allowed to say no. My girlfriend and I are getting married a month apart (we are both in each others wedding parties). I'm not going to give her any less. If anything I will give her more.
But if you really can't afford to do any of the above. Just give what you can give. Whatever amount you give them, you will get back for your wedding.

Re: Wedding guest etiquitte
You definitley have to give what you can give...we are always saying how at our wedding we won't care what we get. Brad and have set up a separate account for weddings. We put a little bit away each month. We had 3 weddings this summer and wanted to be able to give nice gifts. We usually go with the 250-300 range. But like I said, you give what you can. People understand!

We do the same thing. If me or FH are in teh wedding party we give a little more but it really depends on our relationship with the couple getting married and what we can afford
