I am planning to get married in Ireland sometime next year (no definite date yet, we're hoping for summer/early fall). I am a little overwhelmed at the thought of having to plan all of this from the US.
I grew up there for most of my childhood, and my parents/all my family still live there so I know I can rely on their help. However, I do not want to dump all the planning on them, and I want to have an active roll in planning my wedding.
Has anyone gotten married in Ireland? Does anyone know what the best way to choose vendors/locations is when you're an so far from the wedding location? Any help or advice would be appreciated.
Thanks!!!

Re: Wedding in Ireland
I can't really comment on Ireland weddings, but I am planning my wedding from DC. I honestly don't know what I would have done without this website! I have done so much vendor research through this site. Maybe there would be a similar type of website based in Ireland that you could get helpful info from. Also, ask your family members to send you bridal magazines published in Ireland and the UK. They should have ads that could give you vendor contact info.
Good luck!

Re: Wedding in Ireland
Congratulations!
I know 2 people who are getting married this year in Ireland. The brides are US born and the grooms are from Ireland. Not sure how they chose but I know that when they started planning they went to IReland to look at halls. One girl went with her mom for a week and one went with her fiance when they went home for Christmas last year. If your family is still in Ireland I guess you may go home to visit sometime soon? When you do you can go check out places. Since you're here now you can call them and get the basic information like prices, different menus, that sort of thing. Ask them to fax you the menus or anything else that they have in print so you can have all the information to compare with, if you are undeceided over two or more places.
As for vendors, you can ask the hall you decide on who they normally deal with. Most will give you the names of florists or DJ's. The last 2 couples live here now and the fiances are US born, but they went over at least twice to see vendors (and family). At least the prices are not expensive to fly over (other than the holidays).
If you would like any recommendations for anything let me know and I'll ask my friends. My cousin just got married in Dublin too where she lives. Her photographer was amazing.
Oh and dont' forget that when you change your dollars to euros to pay the vendors - dont' forget you have to pay a fee to do it! My friend totally forgot and had to spend a few extra hundred just to change the money to euro when he went to pay the deposits on the hall.
Reception halls/hotel links on the very left column.
I just looked at a hotel in Kildare. OMG. I told DH 'and why didn't you convince me to have the wedding in Ireland????' georgeous hotel

Re: Wedding in Ireland
Maribelle7777 Thank you so much for your advice! My family does live there still and I'm having them see what they can find out for me. I want to get married in Dublin too (where i was born) and would love to know who the photographer is that your friend used. I am worried about photographers - I really want great pictures! I am going to the website you sent me - seems like they have lots of vendors listed so that's really helpful. Thanks again!
ThongLori Good Luck with your Italian wedding!! I'm sure it will be beautiful!!!!!!!!

Re: Wedding in Ireland
My coworker just got married there about 1 month ago. The onyl thing I can tell you is that they are (i think it's still going on) having a mail strike so if you want to pay vendors over there, use UPS or FEDEX.

Re: Wedding in Ireland
My friend just got married in Ireland at the Abbey hotel in Donegal town. Unfortunatley I wasn't able to go because it was right after I just got back from my hm. I heard though that it lasted till the wee hours of the morning and was a blast! The bride was from Ireland and the groom was American. She picked the hall when she went home flast Christmas. She also did more planning while over there in springtime for another wedding. I kno she did do a bit of work though over the phone/internet from here though. Good luck with all your plans....

Re: Wedding in Ireland
I think since you have lived there yourself and have family there, you will be ok. You should search the internet for ideas and then schedule a trip there to book everything. I did that from LA and booked everything in one week this summer. It was a little overwhelming but this board made it easier. See whats on the net!

Re: Wedding in Ireland
IrishTracy - I was born in Dublin City but I lived most of my life in the North of Ireland, until I moved over here. My parents/family live in Galway, but sister lives in Dublin at the moment and I've already asked her to search out some places for me.
Thanks for all your advice ladies - I guess I just feel overwhelmed at the thought of planning this from so far away - I'm the kind of person who likes to do everything and I guess I'm going to have to give up a little control! My one fear is that as I wont be able to get home until Christmas, I won't have enough time to do everything just on a short break!!
