Wedding on a tight budget

Wedding on a tight budget

Hi All,
I'm new to the site as I just got engaged over Vday weekend.. and am trying to put together an elegant but budget friendly wedding by Aug of this year. We're both native NYers and would love to have it in the city, but everything is sooo expensive!cashmoney:

it would help if we weren't also trying to go for a house. Is it crazy to try to do both?

Opinions please?:

Welcome & congratulations!!

How tight is your budget and how many people are you expecting??Also what day of the week (friday; saturday day; eve; sundy)? That will ALL affect the price you're looking to pay.

I checked probably about EVERY place in NYC and they were well over my budget.

First let us know some of that important info (budget/ guest) and you'll get tons of advice from the brides on here :)

welcome and congratulations!!!

it really depends on your situations ... if you both make good money, and if you have money saved up already, and also if either of your parents will be helping pay for the wedding, then it may not be crazy to have a wedding AND buy a house.

a house down payment is probably at least $20k though ... and the average NY wedding was $26k in 2009 .... so if you have it, go for it

good luck!

Wedding services magazine was bf when I was looking for a hall. IDk how tight your budget is but mine is one the small side 25,000 for everything. I was able to find a great RH with that magazine that had an amazing price!

there are places that do all inclusive...usually 10k for 100 guests, DJ, Flowers...would u be willing to look into that option?

Welcome and congrats!!

If you look around a lot and get invites that are on the cheaper side, and a lot of DIY.. you can do it!

Oh my..
25K is WAY over what I was hoping for..probably half that. I know I'm probably dreaming.

Well here's what we've got:

Praise the Lord, my FI has a VA guarantee, which is going to minimize what we need to put down for the house.

I have a dress
I can make my own invitations (I'm crafty)
I'm not having a wedding party
Flowers will be minimal, just a small bouquet for me and table arrangements
We were looking for a Sunday since it'll probably be less $$

I'm hoping all of that will reduce the amount we need to pull this off. I know the venue will probably be the most expensive...

Oh and yes we will be paying for this ourselves and unfortunately we both have alot of people, but will try to keep it to 80-100ppl

I'm telling you pick up the wedding services magazine. It lists more RH than I knew existed.

Dumb question - what is RH?

I'd definitely look into the all-inclusive places.

Douglaston Manor is beautiful and has a reasonably priced all inclusive package. And it's relatively close to the city. It's pretty much impossible to pull that off in the city though. HTH!

Since you have a dress and don't have a wedding party to consult with, keeping things minimal, I would look into places for last minute cancellations, open slots with 6 months or less to go. They will be dying to fill it.

when I went to visit my RH to book for spring 2011, they informed me of a wedding cancellation THIS MAY 2010. Basically they were going to entice me to take the date with major discounts. I was nowhere near ready so I had to let the deal go but it's an option.

Re: Wedding on a tight budget

The fact that you're only 6 months away from your date means that halls should be giving you a really great deal...because most people book a year or more out, if they have your date available, they'd rather have you book it than have the place empty on that date.

Use your short timeline to your advantage.

You can definitely do this - visit a few places, get some quotes. Have you looked into any RH's yet? What interests you in terms of the look of the place? Do you like modern, gardens, waterfront, beachy, etc.? We can definitely point you toward some budget-friendly options if you help us with some details that you consider a 'must have'.

And welcome and congrats!!!

You can def do it in Manhattan with that amt of people. I am getting married in Manhattan. Reception is in the Manhattan Club (Rosie O'Gradys on 52nd Street) There prices are very reasonable. It starts at 90pp for 5 hours.
FM me if you want more info.

Thanks!
Since I was looking in Manhattan, my first disapointing call was to the Central Park Conservatory. It's a beautiful garden in the park. they want $400 just for the permit!

We're not stuck on any particular style, (garden, beach, etc) just affordable and elegant.

Re: Wedding on a tight budget

Congratulations on your engagement!! I am also having a wedding in August, and just started planning last month! I am on a super tight budget as well. I am pulling off a wedding with about 100 guests for about $10,000. So feel free to ask me any specific questions. I did have to have the wedding out east (Medford) in order to accommodate my price. It may be hard to pull that off in or near NYC.
