Wedding song dilemma / solution? Please let me know what you think.

Original post by Shorty McBride

Ok, I'll try to keep this long story short.

Our first 'official' date was FH's senior prom. He's only 4 months older than me, but a grade ahead in school. I was a junior, he was a senior. I was asked to the prom by a senior friend that has now turned out to be gay (he just wanted a date, so he invited me as a friend). FH invited a female friend of his that was a year older, but friends with his whole circle. Bottom line: When the music started, we never actually saw our dates. They were off with their friends, and we were together.

That said, the first slow dance played was Savage Garden's 'I Knew I Loved You (before I met you)', and of course, we danced the whole thing and he officially asked me to be his girlfriend during it.

OK, so you're thinking - easy choice - just go with the savage garden and call it a day. .....BUT ..... I think the song is kinda whiny. I'm not a huge fan of the group or the singer's voice.

I am in love with Queen's 'You're my best friend', because it just just fits us perfectly. We're not really the sappy slow-dance kind of couple.

FH wants Savage Garden for sentimental reasons, I want Queen because I can't listen to the song without thinking of him and what our life together will be like.

Our DJ is very sweet, and we ran this by him.
He suggested using the Savage Garden as our wedding song, then about halfway through the night, he'll announce a 'spotlight dance' for the bride and groom, their BP and their dates, then it'll branch into the whole group. This will be the Queen song.

I need some honest opinions - is this a 'look at me, look at me' thing to do? I don't want to take too much time away from the normal guest dancing, but I really would love that song to be part of our day.

FH says this is a great idea, but then again, he's wedding clueless. What do you ladies think?

THanks

I say go for it! It is your day and you can do whatever you want. AND it is YOUR wedding! It should be a 'look at me look at me' type of day!! I think since the Queen song will begin with you and the BP, and then inviting the whole party to dance will be fine.

I love this idea! and the wtwo songs are great.....plus you want to look back on your video and feel good about your night!

I think this is a great idea-you get the best of both worlds.

i honestly think while its a sweet idea bc we know the background - your guests might find it, well, annoying. they want to drink and boogie, not watch two dances. sorry jmo.

I went to a wedding where they did a best man speech, moh speech, another bridesmaid speech, her father made a speech, and a friend sang to them (no one danced during it).

I sat on my butt for half the wedding!

maybe you can have your dj 'merge' the songs together - dance to the first half of one and switch over to the other one?

thanks for the honesty! that's exactly what I was worried about.
I LOVE the merge idea - love love LOVE it!
That way, we don't have to sway in circles to the whiny no-lyric moaning part in the middle of I Knew I loved You...hmmm...I wonder what the DJ thinks of that?

I dont think that it would be too difficult to merge the songs - and it would definitely be unique.

or you can dance to it with all of your guests later in the reception?

eta: I just reread your original post - your dj said that he would invite everyone to dance after your start your spotlight dance - if you were to do this i would just have him announce that its a 'special song' and get everyone up immediately so they can dance along side you!

well that kinda what i wanted with the spotlight. 30-45 seconds for just us, the Bp and their dates, and then everyone is invited in.

I don't know..I guess I'll figure it out later on. Either way, Savage Garden is our wedding song.

Thanks!

I think the DJ can merge the two together, start with I knew and end with Best friend...kinda like what really happened, he knew he loved you and then became your best friend!! Awe, they are both sweet songs!

imo, i would do the savage garden for first dance and sometime during the night have the dj slip on the queen song, with no announcements or whathaveyou. dance with your husband and enjoy the moment.
