Weddings are so different out of state!

Weddings are so different out of state!

On Saturday, FH and I attended a wedding in Pennsylvania and boy are they different than any NY or NJ wedding I've ever been too.

During the reception I had to pee SO BAD but I didn't want to get up and miss the best man and maid of honor speeches. We ended up having our appetizer, salad, and dinner before they even spoke!

The cocktail hour was cheese, crackers and some veggies. THAT WAS IT! FH and I were like, where's the food food? I think you only really get insane cocktail hours on LI b/c this was a joke.

Lastly, the bar closed an hour before the wedding ended. People were pissed. Apparently, one of the younger guests (he was about 16) was able to get some drinks and puked all over the hallway! So for this we all had to suffer and sip water the rest of the evening.

I just totally realize why Long Island weddings are as expensive as they are. No where else can compare!

Have you girls been to any out of state weddings and felt the same disbelief as me?!

WOW!!! What an eye opener! Where in PA where you? That's funny I will be going to a wedding in PA around Dutch Country--this WEEKEND!!! I will report back to you about how it was. I can't wait actually.

And now that I think of it, the last time I went to a wedding out of State was in FL about 5 years ago and you are right, no cocktail hour, nothing really extravagant....just the four hour reception which half the people showed up to barefoot and barely dressed and didnt even dance...one speech waaaaaaaay at the end that was it. Go figure.

The only other state that I have seen that have similar weddings to those on LI is in Jersey... every other place I've been to (Maryland, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Ohio and North Carolina) is WAY different. It is not as expensive as our halls here and you dont get nearly as much. It is much more low key and casual... people give actual gifts instead of money (like a toaster) and they don't get nearly as dressed up as we do.

FH is from CT and when I brought him to his first NY wedding he freaked out at the amount of food and craziness of everything. My FIL's actually told us that we need to warn his family so they know that the food at cocktail hour is NOT their dinner and make sure they realize there is more, bc the amount of food that we will have will look like a buffet dinner to them lolool

we went to a wedding in Boston, and they had to close the bar at 10pm because it's a Mass. State law... cocktail hour was like ritz crackers and cheese, and we didn't get a dinner option- EVERYONE got chicken! It was very different than weddings on LI, but that's kind of what I expected lol

I've been to a wedding in Maryland where you had to rsvp with your dinner order, there was a cash bar, and people brought actual gifts like you would at a shower. Very weird lol...I hear open bar is not expected in most states outside of the tri-state area. We are obviously wedding crazy.

We are going to a wedding in PA in august. I know we do things over the top in NY but I think certain areas could turn it up a little I just hope i'm not making a pit stop at wendys before we get back to the hotel haha

I haven't personally been to an out of state wedding, BUT my future in-laws have gone to one in Virginia.
The cocktail hour was veggie trays from the supermarket, and their getaway car was a pick up truck. The groom changed into jeans before the reception and...apparently it was something that just needed to be seen to be believed.
They wound up going to a Chinese restaurant to eat after the wedding because the food was so bad!

my step sister had a wedding in CA and it was SO weird. also she was amazed at 'how much' money we gave as a gift. it was definitely weird. her cocktail hour had almost no food, her cocktail hour musicians played until 10 pm and no one danced! strange.

I have only been to weddings in CA. I will have two weddings this fall to attend in NYC. I'm curious to see how it's like and compare!

My fh and I live in PA but getting married in LI because family/price/etc... When we first got engaged, we looked for venues in PA, we found a couple of beautiful/unique venues and let me tell you they were very expensive but definitely worth the price. The experience was very different because you rent only the venue ($$$$) and choose their preferred vendors, for instance the cater provides you with tables, linen, and bar options, etc...The venue was gorgeousss and the food from the cater was over the top. I think it all depends on how much you wan to spend, the venue, and the surroundings since PA has a lot of countryside. At the end, my mom refused us to get married in PA since all the family is in LI..so we went and checked out venues and we fell in love with the Fox Hollow. The price was much better than the venue in PA. ;)

I went to my cousins wedding in arkansas. The ceremony and reception were in the church. It's a dry county so there was no alcohol. During the reception we had cheese and crackers. My cousins father in law wanted to take us to a nice dinner after. We went to kfc......all you can eat buffet lol. Oh almost everyone was wearing jeans.

I've been to a FL wedding and it was just as grand and lovely as a NY wedding but a quarter of the price! I know it doesn't compare to NY standards but all I really wanted was an outdoor rustic wedding and in NY you need to have endless funds to do that which is disappointing in my situation but I also try not to get caught up in all the 'stuff' of a NY wedding because at a certain point it really does go from the commitment you're making to how many people did or didn't like your favors and why there were only 2 flowers on your cake when you wanted 3 etc. etc. Open bar is the biggest thing I've heard that other states don't do but I would take a less extravagant wedding to have some extra cha-ching $ in the pocket after the fact.

Hahahaha this!!!! I was telling FH that my family might think that the cocktail hour food is the dinner!

I've been to a ton of weddings in Rhode Island and its been the same way you described. Cocktail hour was a big table of cheese! That's it!! Some had open bar every other hour of the wedding (???) others had just free beer and wine but a cash bar for alcohol. I told FH his friends are gonna think we are big time ballers when they come to our wedding!

FH and I currently live in Maryland, but are obviously getting married on LI. We looked at 2 venues down here and it was actually more expensive for us to get married here than on LI! I must say down here they price food and drinks separately, so you pay per person for the food, and then you can add the 'bar' on afterwards. It was crazy! So when I got the price quote for our venue in NY, I asked if that included the bar and they looked at me like I was crazy -- because of course it was included!

I have been to a wedding in Texas and Florida.

Texas was the ceremony and basic wine and cheese cocktail hour with a string quartet. We all went back to the families house where the grandmother made cold cut sandwiches.

The Florida wedding.. short church ceremony with 1 hr 45 min between that & cocktail hour. So we got to the venue with no food or drinks for over an hour. There was one bar outside with very limited alcohol, no table service at all they only asked us if we wanted coffee and brought it while our dirty dinner plates were stacked in front of us.

So yes while LI weddings are overpriced it is definately a more grand experience.

Re: Weddings are so different out of state!

I haven't been to one out of state but my mom has and I've heard enough to feel like I have. plus my entire family down south has had problems from day 1 about my wedding thanks to how different we are up here lol. my family thought I added extra hours! and oh yeah they don't take limos down there so another thing to whine about. anyway.

down in Louisiana where my mom lives, actually she lives on the border but whatever lol. my cousin had her wedding in new orleans it was like only 3 hours long her reception. they barely had any food. they also just let her mom pay per person as they showed up. she was literally standing by door handing over money as new people came in. definitely not as fancy down there.

another wedding my mom went to more recently they had an auction off the bride for a dance. they literally sat there bidding her off it got up to over 100! at first she was dancing and people were throwing money (the money dance?) then they started an auction. again they barely had any food though her wedding I think might have been 4 hours. my mom spent the whole night telling my stepdad how much more food I'll have and how much better it'll be lol. no one does it like NY does.

also when I was young probably like 12-13 we went to my cousin's wedding in Florida I think in Tampa. that was the only wedding semi like ny but they are $$$$$$ people. I still remember that Caesar salad as the best I ever had lol. still it def wasn't as much food at cocktail hour. it was some huge mansion though with fountains outside I remember walking around just going wow.
