Weddings in other places....

Weddings in other places....

Someone mentioned this topic in another post- and I HAD to tell this story!!

A friend of mine grew up here, and moved south a few years ago. She got married recently down there. So- the wedding guests were pretty much split down the middle in terms of her family, his family. From her fam, they got a little over $10,000. From his family...

Something like $500!!!!!!

And some people didn't even bring gifts because 'well, I already got them something for the bridal shower.' !!!

Now- we all know that in reality, the gifts is not what a wedding is REALLY about- but when you have the side by side comparison- isn't it crazy to see how differently things are done??

its so crazy!!!

My friend got married @ east wind in may and her hubbys family came from somewhere mid-west..
They gave $25 a head and some brought glasses ( like a set from walmart $10) NOT ON HER REGISTRY and other useless $5 gifts..

They also spend like $10 pp where they are from , so they cant comprehend. LOL

Re: Weddings in other places....

I know.

A very dear friend of mine just got married- and his wife is from the mid-west. And while they got married here, it was a totally different thing. It was a backyard wedding. It was really beautiful and a lot of fun, but totlaly different.

We all kept talking about how completely different weddings are in different states. I mean, if you go even just upstate its a different thing. To the point where the simpliest of LI weddings would be considered completly over the top.

a friend of mine grew up on LI, moved to VA about 5 years ago, she had her wedding in VA in april. It was a cash bar, and people bought her gifts. with bows on them. It was very weird to see.
No one does weddings like people do around here.

I'm from Nashville, and my FH came with me to my sisters wedding down there 6 years ago....CULTURE SHOCK! I didn't realize the difference until I went to a NY wedding. I asked where the gift table was too. And now, when he talks about how much he plans on getting in monetary presents from our wedding....it just sounds like an insane amount! There really is NOTHING like a NY wedding

my mom lives in tennessee and when she was telling her co-workers and friends about my wedding plans, they couldn't believe how much things were going to cost. it's my understanding that a lot of people down south do backyard weddings.

at first, I was like....i would have LOVED to do a backyard wedding...so fun and casual.

But then I realized that I have been to a TON of 'formal' outdoorsy events. Graduation parties, E-parties, birthday parties...and its really nice that the only thing even generally associated with a formal party of this type is a wedding. Its like I can't ever compare it to anything else in my life, because I have never had a party for me like this.

i like that.

yea it's pretty crazy - my brother used to live in TN and it was like either gifts or very small monetary gifts - then again, the cost of the wedding in NY vs TN is completely different. Madness! Weddings in NY is almost like a downpayment for a house fo some people!!!

Re: Weddings in other places....

im from LI and my FH is just from upstate NY and its crazy even how they do weddings...

in barns in the back yard with pig roasts, pasta salads, and ppl bringing desserts... or at the local american legion and not very formal at all!! but they also have like the whole town of like 300-400 ppl there. but the whole wedding all together only costs them lik 5000 instead of what we are paying for a LI wedding. lol

i just hope that doesnt hinder the amt of monetary gifts we get from ppl that are coming from up here..

but its gonna be a culture shock just for people coming from up here.. still in NY lol

I am from Anchorage, Alaska and my FH is super worried about this! He is upset that we won't get much from my family! I have explained though that the flowers are being done by my cousin which is huge! So I'm sure we are getting more than the normal out of state family!
