OK.. so I have been working out for a little over 3 weeks. I have done 5 days a week, at 30 mintues on the elliptical and then some arm weights.
I have been watching what I am eating and changed my eating habits. Instead of not eating all day at work and binging when I get home, I eat oatmeal for breakfast, a small salad (balsamic vinegar for dressing only) and a slimfast lmeal bar (250 cal). After I get home I have a little snack like carrots, a turkey wrap, jello, etc. and then I eat a small portion of whatever my mom made for dinner and take extra veggies. After dinner I will have a piece of fruit or toast with some peanut butter.
I have yet to lose ANYTHING!!!!!
I know muscle weighs more than fat and all that junk... but I thought Id lose SOMETHING.
What is going on?

I was having a similar problem - I don't know what you are eating for dinner, but perhaps you need to trim down the bad cards (like the bread for instance).
I started following the South Beach Diet principles while I continued to work out, and I already lost 8 pounds in 9 days.

Re: ***... weight issue...
honestly ..i ddoesnt sound like you are eating enough.. you wont like that response though. a salad and a slim fast bar..doesnt seemlike much to rev up the metabolism...unless on the salad you are having protien?
sounds like you are eating frequently...which is awesome..but i wonder if you arent eating enough..considering your body is probably not used to excercising so much..it may be trying to 'store' any calories you are taking in.
just a thought!

i agree, you are not eating enough. you need to add more protein to your diet too, some PB is not going to cut it

Re: ***... weight issue...
yes more protein, like for dinner have a piece of fish with steamed veggies. or turkey or chicken, cooked plainly. dont use too much oil or butter.
also what kind of bread are you eating? whole wheat is better than white bread.
what are you drinking? stick to water. anything carbonated makes you bloated.
try counting your calories and staying on a diet of 1200-1400 calories. the diet board on here has some great suggestions.
start making a food diary of what you are eating and keep track of everything you eat. also wine and alcohol doesnt help in burning calories or fat.

I agree with the others, I don't think you are eating enough... if you don't enough, your body will go into 'survival' mode and start packing away anything you eat and turning it into fat.... it stinks but its built into us, back from the times when food wasn't always plentiful and in order to survive times with less food, our bodies had to store anything we ate.

Give yourself more time too - I've been having the same problem and I think part of it is due to just getting older and your metabolism slowing. It starts happening in your 20s from what I hear.
Maybe you should try measuring yourself instead - sometimes that's a more accurate judge. Or try on something that used to be tight - maybe that'll let you know how far you've gotten.

Re: ***... weight issue...
i used to weigh 110 lbs. and i have major stomach issues and then had two minor surgeries last year, one was on my leg so i couldnt work out and then i havent worked. out since so over the past 2 years i have gained 30 lbs.
i couldnt figure out why i was gaining so much weight because i was barely eating other than if i went out to eat which was once a week. but it was from lack of exercise, the fact that my current job is a desk job and i skip meals and then eat too much at one. my metabolism as a result is all screwed up.
i dont think you're eating enough, esp. protein. i'm planning on seeing a nutritonist soon and i'm hoping it will help me start eating better and lose the weight i gained. good luck.

Re: ***... weight issue...
It's all about the protein mixed with lower sugar, good carbs, exercise and lots of water.
I started the South Beach Diet and going to the gym last May and have lost 70.5 pounds so far.

Not true!!! I was heavy until my late 20's, and then began dropping all of it - my metabolism was fast because I exercised and ate healthfully. The slower metabolism is a myth! I am 32 years old now and thinner than I was in my teens!!!

You should eat more during the day and eat lighter at night.

Re: ***... weight issue...
I agree with the girls who say you are not eating enough. You need to stack most of your calories earlier on in the day and you are def. not getting enough nutrients. I think your breakfast is fine, but for lunch I would do brown rice and grilled chicken or a large spinach salad with nuts, chicken, chick peas, etc and a lil olive oil. PLus drinking atleast 8 glasses of water will help flush your system out. You shoule also be snacking during the day (fruits, almonds, etc) and then a decent dinner. Also, what time is your last meal?? You should try to set a time that you will not eat past like 7 or 8. Also, how much cardio are you doing and for how long? I noticed that I started losing weight when I was taking 4 spin classes a week. That was just my personal experience, not sure what your schedule is like. Don't give up though, you will def. lose the weight if you keep at it! HTH.

Re: ***... weight issue...
you are doing the same thing over and over you need to shock your body
i think that your routine will not do anything unless you change it every day
take some classes like kick boxing, step and yoga
change things up
you should be really proyd of yourself for going to the gym- now you just need to tweak your routine so you can truly benefit

i agree with preshy7, you need to change up your workout routine. maybe go to some aerobics classes a few times a week, and you also need to incorporate more weight training into your regimen. 'some arm weights' just isnt enough. see if you can get a trainer to show you weight training for the entire body. you may have to hire one for a few sessions, but once you know the different weight training exercises, you can do them on your own.

You need to eat more I think. Your metabolism slows down when you don't eat enough. I would replace that slim fast bar with some fresh fruit too. 250 is a lot of calories for one little processed bar!

I was just going to say that. you are already burning much more than your body is used to...plus such caloric restriction...
your body is basically saying 'what the eff is going on here...I don't like this' and is protecting itself.
make sure you consume 1500 calories a day if you continue your exercise routine like that, and DEFINITELY DO NOT drop below 1200. your body will go into shock.

Ditto. Your body is storing everything you're eating b/c it needs it.
In actuality, you should be eating three meals per day, and three snacks per day.

Re: ***... weight issue...
I agree with most of the posters that say you are not eating enough. Clearly you need more protein. I know it sounds silly to eat more to lose but you are not giving your body fuel to burn so it's holding onto the weight. Those slim fast bars are good in a pinch when you can't do anything else, but it's processed and fresh foods will make your body happier. I started losing when I cut out the frozen lean cuisines and such.
Your workout routine needs to change up. Elliptical, treadmill, recumbent bike, squats, leg lifts, abs..all make your whole body work. Stretching and weight training will rev up your metabolism while making you stronger and leaner. Even if the scale doesn't move that much, your clothes will tell you it's working. This is what's happening to me. It took me 6 weeks to lose 10 lbs, but my clothes fit so much better and I have so much more stamina. I work two jobs and go to school. Take a yoga class once in a while.
I still have about 20+ lbs to lose (at least, but I'm being realistic), I also limit alcohol big time. That stinks for me since I'm the cosmo queen, but I think it's worth it.
