I just started tanning again to get ready for the wedding and for summer and my skin seems to be having a really strange reaction that I have never had in the past. The first time I went I was fine, the second time I burned myself a bit, but nothing major. The third time I felt like I had burned myself and had a prickly hot pain all over my chest and stomach, but no where else on my body. It was a pretty intense pain and it kept me up that night. The next day I was fine, so a few days later I went back. As soon as I layed down I started to get that prickly hot feeling on my chest and stomach, so I covered that area with a towel. Well, it didn't seem to help and I had the same intense prickly hot pain all night after I got home. I don't know what could be causing this.
I have tanned before and never had anything like this and the skin on the rest of my body is fine and not reacting at all. Has this happened to anyone else?

Re: Weird reaction to tanning
Maybe you started with too many minutes or in a machine that was too strong - also did you use any cream after your session, it usually helps my skin. It also helps to use an accelorator (for the moisture).

Re: Weird reaction to tanning
are you on any type of medicine that causes sun-sensitivity (like BC pills)?

Are you using different lotion? Maybe you're allergic to it? My skin gets hot and prickily when I am allergic to a certain lotion

Re: Weird reaction to tanning
Once when I went tanning a had a similar pain just on my chest... I got a very slight unevern tan (red in some places even though I'm never red anywhere)....I went again that week and I had that strange itchy pain the next day I was totally burned (just on my chest everything else was white)...it was so bad I actually blistered. I had used a cream that second time so I came to the conclusion that cream made my skin have some sort of reaction or that there was something wrong with the bed since I had used the same one for both sessions. Did you use a cream or is it the same bed?

You are most definitely allergic to the lotion! Change immediately!

Re: Weird reaction to tanning
I have had that feeling before and I didn't even use lotion. I used to go faithfully from May until October. The following year, I had such a bad experience that in the middle of the night I would would take of my pajamas and lay flat up against the cold wall. This year, I burnt very badly (which has never happened before) and I broke out on my face and chest and back. I hadn't used any type of lotion. Very weird...

Re: Weird reaction to tanning
If it's just red, maybe it's heat rash. If you have little white bumps, it could be Molluscum Contagiosum or Folliculitis which can be caused by fungus spread from person to person when the tanning bed isn't cleaned properly.

Re: Weird reaction to tanning
That sounds exactly like sun poisoning. You were exposed for too long. It can build up from other exposures also. Once you've done that it can be very sensitive for a long time. Be careful!
