Well the strike is making it harder for the fire department to get to their jobs.

Original post by N.Y.bride

Anthony said the traffic in Brooklyn is SICK. He's a chauffeur. This could mean longer response times which could mean peoples lives! I hope these people are fined big time!

Cops, firemen and teachers go YEARS without contracts. It's just not right to endanger so many people.

Well my Fh works for transit and by you saying you hope they get fined big time will be hurting my family. As of now he loses 2 days pay for every 1 day they're on strike not to mention the actual day that they strike which adss up to 3days pay everyday.

I am sorry for the financial hardship this is causing your family, but they shouldn't have striked. It is illegal and they knew the consequences when they chose to walk.

It wasn't the employees choice to walk , the president couldn't agree with the MTA so it was his cabinet that voted not the thousands of workers. Do you honestly think that the majority of these people want to loose that much money?? I know I don't especilly since it's close to the holidays.

the reports I heard about the fines is that the union will make the individuals whole if the fines are reinforced. The workers will not be liable for the money personally in the end. I hope this is the case.

i don't know if this has been said--but i just wanted to respond to this post--rather than read every one else's posts.

does it stink that you will be hurt financially by the strike? yes. but will the strike hurt millions more new yorkers? ABSOLUTELY i understand that TWU workers want certain concessions, but this is not the way. this strike is selfish and holds NYC hostage. NYPD, FDNY, and the Teacher's unions have all negotiated contracts for YEARS...and they don't strike. The TWU's contract expires, and 3 days later they are off the job?!?!??! You know why the cops, firefighters, and teachers don't strike? Because they know that it would create such a huge hardship for the people of NYC, and they would lose all the respect and sympathy of every taxpayer.

Not for nothing, but do you really think that the TWU president Toussaint is gonna have to worry about his paycheck during this strike? Or his bills being paid? NO...he'll be fine...but what about the people he represents?

I know its hard on us when they stike but we must take into consideration the transit workers they have a cause and we should respect and support their cause.

and to clarify when I meant fined.. I meant fine the idiot who made the decision to break the law and strike.. Not the individual workers

I agree w/ both of these comments. I understand nothing is final now, but in all actuality if they kept working nothing at all would have been done to fix anything

i wouldn't blame the individual workers. they don't choose to strike, the union voted on that.

The workers voted to authorize the strike. It wasn't just the handful of union leaders who decided to strike.

Are you sure about that one

Yes. The union doesn't just strike without being authorized by its constituents.
Strike

Yes I understand that they can vote on it, but do they have the last say

well said! When you choose to take a job supporting a vital part of the community (cops, fire, emt, etc.), not going on strike is part of what you sign up for. It's no different for the mta workers. Don't like it? Find another job.

What they're doing is illegal and each individual striker who is breaking the law should be punished. I have no sympathy for the strikers; they are greedy and they voted to allow this to happen.

And how did Al Sharpton come into this?? He always seems to be behind trouble IMO.

OMG I TOTALLY agree.

By the way my firemans contract was 3 years late??

last NYPD contract was filed like 2 yrs. late...and actually expired the day it was filed. (they are ALWAYS 2 yrs. behind) so technically NYPD is working without a contract.

Ummm, I don't think Al Sharpton is involved at all. It's just that the union official who is often interviewed on the news looks a lot like AL Sharpton!!!!

As for the workers, at this point, they have to support their union. I think I pretty much agree that creating a 2 tier system where new workers get less benefit than old workers is not acceptable. That is what MTA was offering.

On the one hand, I think that transit workers make pretty good money and get great benefits for what they do. On the other hand, I think that the fare hikes have been ridiculous and for what we pay, more of the money should be passed on to workers.

I always look at both sides but for the most part, I lean pro-union!

ETA--I know that a strike is illegal but unfortunately, workers don't always see results unless they shut the place down to show they mean business!

I saw Sharpton at a rally on the news. He was with the TWU

Activist Rev. Al Sharpton said before the rally that a possible strike 'will clearly be a tremendous burden' on city residents but the MTA, not the workers, should be blamed in the dispute. Citing the agency's $1 billion budget surplus, Sharpton said, 'they have the wherewithal to do the right thing.'

Unfortunately they both look like Al Sharpton, 2 of them

Ah, okay but you've gotta admit Sharpton looks a lot like that other guy! We'll probably see them together at some point!

My DH is leaving work downtown now and he usually stays until after 7. So, will he be earlier or later than usual????

They were together. It was SCARY.
