Went to a wedding this weekend.....PROBLEM!!!!!

I went to a wedding at my hall this weekend. This smoke free law is REALLY taking away from the wedding. At one point there was NO ONE on the dance floor & tables empty. I am going to be SO UPSET if at one point there is no one dancing. Has anyone gotten away w/ having smoking at there wedding even with the ban?? If you don't want to say it on your post you can FM me!!! I have to figure something out!! MY FI smokes!! There is No way he can go to a wedding & not smoke for 5 hours!!!! PLEASE HLEP!!!

I thought that if it was a private function you could smoke? I think it depends on the individual hall. I know my hall provided a smoking 'room'- quite a few people were in that room- but it didn't 'ruin' the party.

I will be honest with you. I am a smoker and I've been to weddings EVEN before this non smoking law where we were not allowed to smoke in the actual reception room. I can honestly say I enjoyed it MUCH better. I would not be worried. Every wedding I've been to where we had to go outside there were still PLENTY of people dancing and chatting at the tables. I've never even thought of this being a problem until you just mentioned it.

She must've had a HUGE guest list of smokers because I think nowadays, the NON SMOKERS outweigh the SMOKERS. JMO! Dont' worry about it! I'm not sure if there will be a way to get around the non smoking law... Your FH will just have to sneak out once in a while, that's all, he's going to have to try and stick it out.

Not to mention, you FI may enjoy the smoking 'break' from what's going on, so he can take in the day! IMO it might work out better.

Tracy, maybe the wedding you went to was just not a dancing crowd?? It happens....and, was the entertainment any good? Most of the time, that's a big reason why people don't dance.

I would not sweat the non-smoking thing. As long as the music is good, food is great, people will run out for a quick puff and come right back to the party. If I were you, I'd be more concerned about the placement of the bar in relation to your reception room. JMO.

I have been to non smoking weddings when I was (I am trying to quit now) a smoker.
People went outside and came back in, I never noticed a difference really.

Don't worry you will be having such a great time you won't notice.

Most of the weddings I have been to were no smoking. I in fact prefer it that way.
The smokers can go outside, especially if it's warm weather. Don't worry Tracy, you'll be fine. FH will be way to involved looking at how beautiful you are to worry

I heard on the radio yesterday, that apparently, when they put the new 'no smoking anywhere' law into effect, they forgot to repeal the first law, which states that you CAN have smoking in your establishment if you meet certain requirements (like fire codes, etc.). Because there are two laws on the books, it is legal to choose which law you will follow. Someone in Nassau still has smoking in his establishment because he said he's choosing to follow the first law. Most people don't know this is an option for them.

This was for Nassau County. Not sure about Suffolk.

Also, I'm sure the County is working on this ASAP so I wouldn't just assume the old law hasn't been repealed yet. I'd check into it.

But on the other hand, I really wouldn't be too concerned about it. It's rare for EVERYBODY to step out for a smoke at the same time. These days, there are more non-smokers than smokers, and more and more people trying to quit. I don't think you'll end up with an empty dancefloor.

I'm sure it will all be fine!!

I agree, i woulndt sweat it, it was probably more the dj or band than the fact they were outside smoking. You will enjoy a smoke break every so often from the reception

From what I know if your wedding is at a private club in Suffolk you can still smoke becasue the state law doesn't impact them. But the county law in Nassau does affect all places private or not so there will be no smoking.
I went to a wedding last week and the smokers (FH's mom) went outside for a little while it wasn't too bad. If you have a lot of smokers it may be an issue with everyoen outside but if the music is good it'll bring people back in.

Dont' worry about it

Wow, I never even thought of this. Now I am worried. I would have to say that a third of my family smokes. When I bookd my hall I know there were ashtrays in the bathrooms and Hallways and lobby. This smoking ban s*cks. I don't want anyone smoking in the reception room itself, but I want them to be able to go somewhere to smoke without going outside ( my wedding is in February). I have to check with the hall. Thanks for bringing this up. Maybe I'll offer them money to allow us to smoke.

Tracy
The no smoking law is in effect at SMCC
BUT to be honest with you it did not effect my wedding at all
the band could not get over all the people dancing from the minute they announced me and mike until we were getting kicked out.
People did go out and smoke but it didnt take away form the event, we were just having too much fun.
When I drink I smoke, but I only got in one (thank goodness cause I didnt want pic of me smoking).

so I would not worry about it too much
I guess it depends on the crowd.
most of us didnt want to miss any particular song, lucky we found time to go to the bathroom.

Tracy,

Don't worry!! I am a smoker and alot of my guests were also. I did not have a smoking reception because I had alot of non smokers as well. I didn't notice the room lookign empty at all during the night. Most people went for a smoke and came right back in.

I would say 90% of my guest are smokers!!! (Scary)
I think it didn't help that everyone hated the bride!!! (even her family was complaining about her) I just want my wedding to be great!!! Her dj was good (not great) Maybe it was just the whole atmosphere!! I'm pretty sure that nobody coming to my wedding will be saying the words 'I give it less then a year' (Lets hope so!!!)
I'm just finding new things to be paranoid about!!

THANKS LADIES!

Re: Went to a wedding this weekend.....PROBLEM!!!!!

We had no smoking in our reception (before the ban) and our dance floor was packed all night. I noticed 2-3 people having a smoke on the deck during the cocktail hour, but if anyone else left for a cig, I didn't notice.

Don't worry about it. Everyone will want to be inside having a great time at your wedding!
