Went to an Indian reception this weekend...

How different!!!

We were supposed to be there at 7pm but Jim’s grandmother had to be taken to the ER and set up in the hospital, we weren’t sure we were going to go, but she’s fine and asked us to go anyway. So we got there around 7:30. NO ONE was there!!!

By 8:30 or so it got more active. OMG such BEAUTIFUL colors!!! I forgot what they call those outfits the women wear but I just kept looking at them wishing I could get away wearing those. What a colorful room it was!!! The sparkles, gold and jewelry all those bracelets the sounds of chimes in the air. So magical.

I felt bad for the bride. She’s from Nebraska. Home grown American girl. There was this really pretty chez (?) couch on a raised dias/platform that apparently no one told her about. They got married in Omaha the weekend before, Honeymooned in upstate NY then came to Long Island for this family’s side reception. The couch REALLY threw her. She had to sit up there and take pictures. It was hot up there too. She told me later how they didn’t warn her and it was a bit awkward for her. Plus when they were outside the room, no one recognized her and her hubby so they just walked by her. Not until she was announced did they realize she was the bride!

She had this really pretty pink outfit on. And his family gave her necklaces to wear and bracelets. Their first dance was that song from Top Gun (can’t remember it right now). Then the party got started. Man they can dance!! LOL Didn’t understand a word of it but it had a beat and those guys (male family members) dragged EVERYONE to the dance floor.

The dinner was Buffet style, which Jim loved and I tried lots of new stuff. Indian style ice cream for dessert with some sorta of sweet dish, which I later found out was a cheese of types.

Odd thing was, once folks ate.. they left. Really didn’t stick around too much after that.

Just thought I’d share. It was so very colorful! I did assure Jim we had no throne to sit on at our reception. hehe

It sounds really interesting and fun. They do have some beautiful traditions.

The women wear saris, and the dessert was probably galubjamen (sp??). So, you weren't Elaine?? I was invited to a wedding in India this past Christmas but couldn't make...but man, did I want to!!

Sounds really neat. Where was it held??

Re: Went to an Indian reception this weekend...

it was just a 'small' (haha) reception in Akbar's behind Roosevelt Field.

I know there were at least 100 people crammed in there!!

Those Sari's were just Gorgeous!!

Jim's best friend is Indian (was supposed to be our best man but can't make it) this was the reception of the little brother.

The introduced EVERYONE. His parents, her parents, his brother and wife and children, his brother's wife's parents, aunts, uncles, cousins!

haha It was so very formal but casual at the same time. Everyone was having a blast. Open bar served pina coladas and margaritas by the dozens!!

I was talking to the bride later. Both she and the groom are so tired of pictures. Between their 'western' wedding & reception in Omaha to the Indian reception here in NY they've been photographed so much!

Ah.. those colors!
Blues
Reds
Oranges
so pretty!

I had a blast! Hope to get invited to more!!

The best part was it was so pretty and all that. They had some table cards but not everyone RSVP'ed. No fancy table settings, no fancy centerpieces. No formal this or that. It was nice to know that even in NY you can still have an elegant, formal but comfortable wedding. We never even got invites. It was all word of mouth!!!

We did get favors. These little glass boxes that have bubbles blow in them to make a figure of a girl and boy leaning over for a kiss. (you've seen them).
