Went to Douglaston Manor tasting

Ok, I'm pretty smashed, but I think I can do this...
The entire bottle of wine by myself... the food was... eh.

Tuscan platter (antipasto) was generic. I think I can do it by myself. I hate mushrooms, roasted peppers and prosciutto. The mozzarella and salami and roasted eggplant were good. He loves this stuff, so he loved it.

The penne a la vodka was good. Not a heavy sauce. Very tomato-y and spicy, and I think it would be good for an appetizer. And the pasta was a perfect al dente. Concensus was a yes.

Chateau Briand was incredible. Cooked perfectly. Definitely on our menu. Chicken Francaise was awful. Drunk, I could make a better one. We both agreed it won't be the chicken dish. He tried the salmon (I'm allergic) and he thought it was ok. He's not a salmon fan, but he would choose it because a lot of people like salmon.

We didn't get to try cake, as it's a separate tasting. But they did bring us coffee and cookies. They were good.

So far, he would book this place. I want to defer to him, since he wants this party. We have one more tour at another venue on the 23rd, and I'll wait until then.
It was a good night, and we had a good time. But the food was... eh.

We'll see what the Riviera shows us.

You both need to be blown away by the food, the food & music make the party, but that's just my opinion. Hope it happens for you both at the next tasting.

I agree with the others. If they can't manage to impress an engaged couple looking for a RH, how are they impress a room full of guests?

I agree, Lauren1802. We long islanders are finicky when it comes to food. Which is why I'm so shy to pull the trigger... Last thing I need is one guest to complain about their chicken dish.

YUP!!! I had the same problem!! Best two food tastings we had were Thatched Cottage and Westbury Manor. I wanted soooo bad to love the food at The Vineyards but it paled in comparison and that alone made me not book and is why we kept looking although FH was obsessed with them!

aw really?! Our friends got married at the Vineyards and we LOVED the food there... but hey if it didn't blow you away, you have to keep looking! lol

Man, I had no idea so many places would do tastings for you before you booked! Had I known that I would have been getting myself some free meals!

Not a lot do. I didn't even know a tasting outside of a bridal expo was possible. DM was the only one so far to offer it. Swan Club wouldn't do a tasting unless you signed a contract. But they do have a restaurant that's open during the week, and the stuff on the menu is also offered for weddings, so a tasting is possible there too. I think we just lucked out with DM doing it for us.

Anyone know if the Riviera will do a tasting before signing a contract?

I actually just went to an event at Douglaston Manor, and I have to say although the grounds are beautiful, the food was horrendous. My friend (who was the host) was mortified that majority of the food was terrible and some plates cold. No one ate the entire plate they were served. I would check out a hall where you love the food.

LOL!!! See, & the FH and I are nuts about food and said we refused to book anywhere unless and until we tried to food--and yes some other tastings were done at actual bridal shows...I went to your Venue too, and while we loved certain things about the place, we were quoted much lower elsewhere, but we spoke with Mary who was awesome..

We didnt do a tasting but since we happened to visit when she was having a day wedding--the cocktail hour was over and she sneaked us a small plate of fruits and cheeses and crackers and champagne and from what we had it was pretty tasty ;)

Whenever we go to an event at Douglaston Manor, my sister always gets sick. She hates the food there. I live close to there, so my family has booked parties there in the past. Nice place but food not the greatest.

YOU DID!? I'm so glad to hear that! I dont know maybe I was overly critical....it was def near the top...but I can't rave enough about the food at The Historical Thatched Cottage. I don't know what it is about that place...and their food.

Dessert & coffee was my favorite part. Oh my. Now you got me thinking ;)

Call the Riviera and ask when their next showcase is. I went in February, it was free for the bride and groom and $10 if you bring anyone else. They had a whole cocktail hour set up with carving stations and all. The food was great at the Riviera.

I just called them, and they have a tasting scheduled for another couple the same day we're scheduled for a tour. She's not sure if we can piggy-back on that appointment, or if we need to schedule our own tasting. At least I know that they do them prior to contract signing. Thanks!

And they don't do any bridal showcases except for the winter, so there won't be another one scheduled until January or February. Since we're getting married in March, it won't really help.

we did have to sign at our hall but were able to cancel within 30 days i think ? that allowed us to try the food. but everyone RAVES about larkfield's foods. that's all anyone says when we tell them we are booked there- 'OMG The food is soooo goood'
