Went today to get marriage license and it cost $40!!!

We went to the town of hempstead hall. I thought it was 25 or 30. Geesh, just another expense

did they give you a packet??

they gave us a receipt, the marriage license a self addressed envelope for the license and a DMV packet for me to fill out after we receive our marriage license from the them. is that the packet?

I actually think it is cheaper in NYC..

Still- exciting to get the license-- we need to get on that!

I have seen some inconsistencies in the couple of months that I have been on this site. Maybe there needs to be some updating of information.

This is what I found at:

The fee for a Marriage License is $35 payable in a money order only. No other method of payment is acceptable.

Both the prospective bride and groom must appear together in person to apply for a Marriage License. The application must be completed in our offices. The application consists of an affidavit wherein the applicants list various personal details such as their name, address, birth place, date of birth, social security number, and marital history and make a sworn statement that there are no legal impediments to the marriage. Applicants who have been married previously must list all prior marriages on the Marriage License Application. They are required to supply their prior spouse's full name, the date the divorce was granted and the place the divorce was filed and may be asked to produce the final divorce decree. All divorces, annulments, and dissolutions must be finalized before applying for a new Marriage License. If you are a widow or widower, you must provide your deceased spouse's full name and date of death. The Marriage License is generated based on this information. It will be prepared while you wait, and you will take it with you upon your departure. Unless you obtain a judicial waiver, you must wait a full 24 hours before your Marriage Ceremony can be performed.

HMP, we payed cash. Right here in Hempstead 40 bucks, I thought it was 25 from reading this website I was like huh? 40 - ok, I cant argue with them ya know, oh well just wanted everyone to know the fee.

We were going to elope in January instead of Vegas and went to town hall in hempstead and paid $40 for the license. Well I chickened out so we never used it and the other day got a message on my machine from them so I called back and a very nasty woman insisted that I send it back! I felt like asking her if I get my $40 back
