Yes, to a certain extent. Not as bad as you might think but certainly alot less open-minded than me. They are 1st generation immigrants and came to this country in their early 20's so it's not the same type of racism as you are probably thinking about.

My mother — NO!
My step-father — YES!
I dated many people outside of my race! And my mother never had a problem with it, but my step-father always had something negative to say! (I don't know if he is necessarily racist, or just wanted me to date within my race?)

I don't think racist but they have some prejudice and they can be stereotypical. I know at first my dh wasn't accepted right away because he was pr and I was colombian. Especially by my aunt, who thinks she is better than anyone else.

my mom is so the opposite of racist, but my father...archie bunkeresque type of racist (where he thought he was being 'good' but was really being racist)

Yes, but not that bad. Like, my mom would prefer me to have a boyfriend of the same race, but if I didn't and he was a good person she would accept him. But the preference was still there.

Re: Were your parents racist?
Not really, no.
It's more of a joke, but my family would sometimes say something like, if I brought home a sicilian boy they'd kill me. But that came form my grandparents and greatgrandparents..some kind fo cultural rivalry? I don't know. But it was really a joke by the time it got to my generation. My family has always been accepting of everyone

I think you said it better -- not so much 'racist' but definitely stereotypical and have some prejudices. Obviously, I mean, I married outside my race and they love my DH.

i totally agree. my parents prefered me to marry an indian guy, but wouldnt be 100% happy if i married another race. And then there's a hierarchy of the different races that I could've married. it's ridiculous!!

Re: Were your parents racist?
My parents definitely have their prejudices...I wouldn't call them racist, but I definitely heard some non-PC stuff growing up. My dad more so than my mom - he drives me nuts. My grandmother definitely is. There's a not-so-nice term for black people (that literally means 'black' in Yiddish), and she uses it regularly..she's 99, we have to excuse her.

Re: Were your parents racist?
I think that many times 'racism' and 'prejudice' are words that are used interchangeably. It is my understanding that racism is when one views one race as either superior (or inferior) than another. Prejudice has to do with judgements based on a race or culture that may or may not be true. There is a fine line but there is a difference.

This is how my parents are... I know my parents would always make comments (more so my mom/step-dad then my dad/step mom). The comments would usually be sterotypes though.

Same here... my Colombian mom, accept our minority friends, BUT was prejudice against people we'd date outside our race.

Re: Were your parents racist?
yes...they were part of a group of neighbors up in arms when the first black family moved into my neighborhood ( mind you we lived in Brooklyn so it shouldnt have been a big deal)
I teach in a very diverse Newburgh city school and have had more experiences with people of different religions and races and sexual preferences than they ever have so im glad its stopping there

Re: Were your parents racist?
Both parents are to a point... They are VERY acceping of my FH but they can be closed minded in many other ways...
