We went on a whale watching boat quite a few years ago, I believe it was out of Montauk. Don't know the name of the company though, but if you're looking to do it on LI then call a hotel in Montauk and see if they have any suggestions or names.

I have done it twice (whale watches)- once out of Newburyport (north of Boston) and on my honeymoon in St. Lucia. I am pretty sure that for the Massachusetts one I called the day before to make a reservation and then we paid the next day. On our HM I booked through the resort and paid up front. Now, you can probably reserve and pay online.

Both times were amazing, though we saw more whales in Massachusetts. They swam right up next to the boat!

ETA: I think I found the MA one through a tourism guide.

I did it when I was in Girl Scouts, so I was in probably in 4th or 5th grade. We did it out fo Montauk. I do not remember much besides getting sick overboard!

I went a couple of times quite a few years back (like 8 years ago), when it was a day trip. You met out in Montauk at approx. 9 a.m., and left on a boat and came back around 4 p.m. It was great, and about $45/person. You could either bring own lunch, snacks, etc. or there was a little shop that had some snacks. OK, here's the slight problem. . . looked into it again and couldn't find a whale watching day trip out of Montauk. There was a boat, I believe the Viking or what not that offered a Whale Watching trip, but it was a couple of days. I forget the cost. It's possible they offer something now, but that's the only thing I know about whale watching off Long Island. Oh, and they also recommend July dates b/c of mating season with the humpback whales.

I went whale watching out of Montauk in 1998.

It was a nice boat ride, but we saw zero whales. A friend arranged it as a birthday gift, so I don't know the details.

The friend had better luck in Cape May NJ, so maybe try there if you are up for a drive.
