What a day at work..
I felt like the guidance counselor at my school today. I practically was. I hardly taught a thing. I was in and out of the room with the dean and the real guidance counselor allll day over 2 issues.
this one little girl in my class has been left by her mother and she doesn't know where mommy is. the mother told her 'ill be back soon.' and never came back. she told us she was scared and that last night she got to stay with the mom's 'friend' who lives upstairs from them in the apartment building, but the woman works and it was a one night type thing from what i understand. also, mom doesn't send her to school so her attendance is really poor. so anyway, we sent the mother a letter the other day and called many times to address these issues. oh and the mother told the little girl that she is ruining her life. so i think she left on purpose. so we had to call social services. it was so sad cuz the girl had no one to go home to today and she was crying. it literally broke my heart. how selfish is that mother? life might be hard but she has another life to take care of and she just abandoned her.
i just dont know whats wrong with some of these parents i deal with.
on top of that, we had this other little girl join our class recently. shes borderline mentally retarded and she has soooo much trouble with her school work and even holding a conversation with someone. the mother has been in denial and came in for a meeting today (on top of that other issue going on! ahhh). she finally agreed to put her in a special class (12 kids, 1 teacher, 1 teacher's assistant). im really happy about that cuz she'll be much better off there but im so saddened by the story her mom told us. her mom said she had a really difficult pregnancy and when the little girl was born she swallowed the fluid she was in or something and that caused brain damage i guess. and everything was delayed. she didnt utter her first word til she was 2 1/2 yrs old.
sorry for the lengthy post (and if i made anyone else sad by reading this lol), im just upset by all this and it makes me grateful for what i do have. sometimes u just wish u could do more for these kids.
