What a mess.....

Original post by PUPADOLCE

I took two of my girls tonight to try on some bridesmaid dresses.... no one could agree!

The problem is that half of the girls in my bridal party are 'heavy set' and the other half are thin. Everything that I asked them to try on, I was told that it might not look good on the 'heavy set' girls. Please tell me what kind of dress I can choose for heavy set girls???? I want to make everyone happy, but it looks like someone always has something to say.

No, I would never kick someone out!, but I want them all to wear the same dress. Am I being difficult? I'm soo lost right now, I have no idea what to chose.

No!! Or, at least, if you are I am too . I have the same issue - my BMs run from size 2 to size 16 but I wanted them all in the same dress. After many trials and tribulations, I found a dress that will look great on everybody. It's a halter that has a slight sweetheart neckline. The sweetheart neckline is flattering on big boobed girls and the halter allows for the sleeveless look without being strapless or those awful spaghetti straps. It also has a dropped waist with a sash across the natural waist. The dropped waist elongates the torso, which makes them look thinner up top and the natural waist sash accentuates the smallest part of them. It's also a soft satin which is one of the more forgiving materials and an aline floor length skirt, which gives them some room.

Alfred Angelo's website has quite a few dresses where the models are of different sizes so you can get an idea how they flatter each body type here are some examples: I've also included a link to the website.

One of my bridesmaids suggested a dress that has gathering pulling to the side. Most likely my girls will be in a two piece from impressions that has this side gathering. I will try and find a pic.

I think this is the one my girls liked. It's not a good pic of it.

I agree with the seperates. If any of your girls are a little on the heavy side- order something with a thick strap so they don't look lost. THat top is like the one I have for the girls.

Also, A line bottoms suit everyone.

My girls were ranged 2-14 in size, and they all looked good in the same simple strapless a-line dress. I was the largest one of any of them, and I would've looked good in the dress too.

You CAN have them all wear the same dress. Pick something simple and elegant and everyone will look great.

As for the empire waist - some plus size women look great in it - I know I did!

Finally you're always going to have one complainer. You cannot possibly please everyone. My advice is to keep the price range reasonable and the colors flattering and the rest will fall into place.

I just went through this same issue...I'm going with a two piece Bill Levkoff dress that comes with a wrap.

I was in a wedding where every girl was plus size. We wore A-line dresses with capped sleeves. The dresses were made by Jordan. We all wore our wraps for the ceremony and pictures because the girls were worried about showing their arms. During the reception wraps optional.

Check out Jordan dresses and I think A-line is the way to go. Empire waist lines look cute for preganant people but in general they are not flattering. Oh and one more thing, make sure the girls order realistic sizes. There is nothing worse than bridesmaids that are wearing dresses two sizes too small.

A 2 piece will work well. Look for an Aline or Box Pleated skirt. Box Pleats hide EVERYTHING ! An empire waist will make a heavy girl look pregnant. - The 'waist' begins right under the bust.........Stay away from anything Vera Wang, anything in a flowy soft satin (b/c it will stick to EVERY imperfection) and anything w/ a 'mermaid' skirt (VERY fitted) Good Luck !!

I usually think halter/spagetti strap a-lines look best on heavier women. A-line skirts are usually flattering for a lot of body types. You probably want something to lengthen.

I agree on trying your best to have everyone agree on a dress, but this may not happen, and eventually you may have to put your foot down, especially if you really want everyone in the same dress. You might have to be the one who makes the decision...otherwise you will spend too long trying to get everyone to agree.

I think this is one a greatdresfor diffentsizes

I'm on the border line of plus size.
Empirewaist , I usally can't get my boobs in, but halter I hang out in.

Spaghetti straps are not flaltering.Thicker straps work better.

High necks don't work either
V necks or sweet heart necklines that aren't too deep are good, as are round & sqaure.

A line is very flattering.

two peice, I don't like ,I feels like my stomach rolls will show. If I lift my arms.

It migh tbe better totkae your girslseparately ,maybethe heavier girlsfirst, narrow it down, & let the skinny girls pick from those.

Look into two piece sets, that is what I want to do.

I agree.... have everyone get an 'a line' skirt and then each girl can pick out a different top... my BM's got their seperates at David's Bridal...

Empire waist and some sort of sleeve (short sleeve) is most flattering I think. My friend was in this position too - her MOH was very heavy and I was her only BM and I was 5'2 105 at the time.. so what she did was she took the heavy-set MOH to pick out the dress bc she knew what ever was picked would look ok on me. So MOH picked a short sleeved empire waist dress and it looked nice on her and me. I would really try to stay away from strapless and thin strapped dresses.

This is what my MOH wore and she is plus sized (and the model is not)

It's Belsoie or Jasmine (same website I think)
