When we took our son to the doc for his 6 month checkup, I asked about the right time for cheerios, etc. She said we would discuss this at his 9 month visit. I was a bit surprised, I thought he would have this stuff sooner. How old was your child when you gave him/her these types of things? Thanks.

I don't give Amber the cherrios or biter biscuits unless I'm in the room w/her because she doesn't have any teeth. The fruit/veggie puffs are the best IMO because they dissolve when they get wet. The cherrios don't break up as well.

So you think I can start the fruit puff things with Matthew this month?

I believe so. If he's sitting up, there shouldn't be any concerns. I tested it in my mouth first to see if it actually did dissolve and it did. It helped to increase her hand coordination, you had to see her try to feed herself at six months!

MY pedi said the same thing, but Andrew has been eating Cheerios and Gerber Puff, Wagon wheels, Zweiback toast, biter biscuits, etc. from about 6.5-7 months! Yes, he has teeth, but they do not need teeth to eat any of these things. Its all in how they master chewing. The thing they need to master first is the pincher grasp, which really doens't get good until about 8-9 months. Up until then, I had to feed him his Cheeries

Re: What age for biter biscuits, cheerios, etc?
I think its different for every baby. Biter biscuits were fine for Alyssa before she got teeth. Now that she has several teeth, she can bite off huge chunks which is dangerous. She is almost 13 months old and still can't have cheerios even though she has several teeth, she hasn't figured out when food is chewed well enough and has choked a few times on the VEGGIE PUFFS which dissolve in the mouth. So my advice is to take it slowly and at your own pace because even though one baby may be able to do it, doesn't mean your baby will at the same age or even several months older. Good luck.
