I am looking for a new car, or a used car. What is most important is safety feautures and safety ratings.

I would love your opinons.

Thanks so much.

I think Volvos and Subarus are toward the top of the list...

It all depends on what kind you want

I know mine (VW Passat) is highest on Consumer Reports Mid Sized Family Car

Volvo...when I got my Saturn, the insurance told me they were the cheapest to insure because they are so safe.

The Audi A4 is also rated well.

Well for me I know first hand...had a new Hyundai Santa Fe (SUV) someone past a red light (the suv was only 2 months old) me and my son were in the suv and it got so totaled my son came out of it with only a scratch from his seatbelt and I only had some knee problems (I am short seat real close to the wheel so my knees hit the dash board), I couldn't believe how badly damaged it was and we weren't that when I got my insurance money I bought the same exact SUV just a different color!!!!

Volvo, that's all my parents would buy when I was a kid. Don't know if that's changed since Ford took over, though.

Cookie, how do you like the Santa Fe? I don't have one, but love the way they look! And they're pretty reasonably priced too, right?

I have a Hyundai Sante Fe too and love it! The safety rating is one of the main reasons why I got it.

Wow I really didn't know it had such a good safety rating.....I only knew it was safe because of my accident!!

Thanks for letting me know, now I feel even safer then I did before!!!

Saturn... that and they are hardly ever stolen which is big.

I haven't been in the field for a year now.. but I did Auto claims for three years.. What I saw was hardly any Volvo wrecks.. and those that were were minor. I don't know why.

Based on my experience in seeing the damage claim reports and bodily injury here's my personal opinion.

Mercedes
BMW
Volvo
Ford (specifically the SUV types)
Saturn

No offense to ANY Saab owners here, but they were the ones that caused most of the accidents they were involved in. Meaning the rest were usually 50/50 fault ratio where as Saabs seem to have a slighter higher ratio of causing the accident (not all of course)

Mercedes: though I have seen photos and heard so many reports personally of flips, crushes, rams, spins and basically every type of scary type of wreck for most vehicles, but those in Mercedes physically walk out of each one with hardly a scratch. It was darn near freaky!! One guy crawled out of his moon roof to call me with his claim and was very calmly reporting that he had been forced into a concrete median in winter weather and had spun hitting and crushing EVERY single side of his car (front, back and both sides). Then he started crying saying 'oh my god, I dont' know how I just crawled out of that.. I feel fine.' Now most claim people will tell you that you always feel ok then.. its later you feel the affects.. but overall injuries were always lower with Mercedes invovled.

SUV's however CAUSE a lot of damage if they hit smaller cars, roll or flip. Yes they are technically safer but have problems of their own.

Sorry so long.

I have a Hyundai Santa Fe too... I think it's great with safety. We hit a 160 lb deer last month when it jumped out of the bushes (upstate) and although the car did get damaged (a little over $3,000), we walked away without a scratch.. can't say the same for the deer

that was me...and it was 100% my fault!!! but I have to say that there was barely any body damage on the Saab (while the Toyota that hit us was smashed) - but that could be because she hit the back tire...

but I love the Saab...you will never pull that stearing wheel out of my hand...i told DH to plan on having it for 20+ years...
