what are you NOT doing?

what are you NOT doing?

Just curious... it seems like there are so many extra things out there that people do for their wedding... I was curious if I'm the only one who isn't planning on doing them all...

Some of the things I don't think I'm doing (in no particular order):
-Save the date cards
-engagement pictures
-out of town baskets
-slipper basket
-'we do' letters
-groom's gift (we're buying each other our rings, I think that's enough)
-anything special to 'ask' our bridesmaids/groomsmen
-aisle runner
-ringbearer/flowergirl (there's nobody in our immediate families to fill this, and while we could have a distant cousin or a neighbor, it just seems pointless)
-unity candle (not sure about this one)
-cake server

and there are probably others... am I the only one or are these pretty customary for everybody else? What other things are you choosing not to include in your wedding? On the other side of the coin, what unusual things ARE you including?

-ringbearer/flowergirl (don't want kids at the wedding)
-unity candle/sand ceremony

-bo-k/garter toss
-no 'organized' dances (cha-cha slide, etc.)
-no receiving line at church
-no DIYs
-OOT Baskets

I'm sure I'll think of more.....

Re: what are you NOT doing?

This is a GREAT thread!!

I think brides get antsy after they book their vendors and they constantly want to be doing wedding-stuff because they are swept up in it all. This stuff starts to really add up in the $$ dept. I was worried that not doing things like cry packs, slipper baskets, fancy favors, elaborate centerpiecs, etc. put me in the majority.

Im trying to do this as inexpensively as possible since we are paying ourselves. Things we aren't doing:

-Cry packs
-Slipper basket
-Albums from photographer
-Anything 'extra' from the DJ
-Video montages
-engagement party

Things that dont cost $ but we aren't doing:
-Garter/BoK Toss
-Line/group dances
-Pictures btwn Reception and CH

-Save the date cards - Nope - didn't do them because we werent sure who we were inviting when we set the date, and didn't want to have to tell people they can go ahead and do whatever they wanted that day after all!

-engagement pictures - they came with our photography package - but we have yet to pick out our free picture or order extras - too busy and poor...

-out of town baskets - Nope

-slipper basket - Nope - never heard of them until I came onto LIW - let them kick off their shoes if they chose to wear uncomfortable shoes!

-'we do' letters - What??? Someone enlighten me on this one!

-groom's gift (we're buying each other our rings, I think that's enough) - I'm gift enough!!!

-anything special to 'ask' our bridesmaids/groomsmen - other than to pay for their dresses, shoes, tuxes, shower, parties, hair, make up? A vacation to Tahiti may be a good idea, but other than that, I am not asking them for one more thing!!!

-aisle runner - provided by our reception hall

-ringbearer/flowergirl - Absolutely! 2 FG's and 1 RB!

-unity candle (not sure about this one) - We are Jewish and Buddhist - no need for it

-cake server - I think my stepmom got me one, if not, I'm sure reception hall will provide

Re: what are you NOT doing?

Saw other things you guys posted

DJ giveaways - we get some with the package we chose - but I really just want it for the kids

Cry packets - they can use their sleeve if they are going to have a sob fest at the wedding

favors - stepmom looking into it - I am going to talk to my parents about a donation instead

choc. fountain - Harbor club threw in for free!

programs - this isn't a broadway show!

menu card - the guests will have to hear the waiters tell them their options

not throwing the bouquet or tossing my garter...

Organized dances - well - I'm a sucker for the electric slide...

aw, I'm glad you like the thread! That's kind of the way I feel... like so many of these things are just kind of extras that add up to a lot, and while I don't have a really really tight budget, I still want to save pennies where I can. After all, it's only one day, why spend all that money all in one place? If nothing else, I'd rather save the money and donate it somewhere, or have it to put to a house downpayment than to make sure I have individual cry packs!

oh, and a few things I forgot to add:
-crypacks
-fancy favors (I'd like to do a donation favor and give out live-strong bracelet type things, although not necessarily specifically live-strong)
-huge fancy flower arrangements on the tables - I'd like something simple and based around pillar candles.
-light shows and other dj extra type things

table menus, votive candles for tables, placecards, and chair covers are all thankfully included with our hall. I'm waiting to see if we can get a chocolate fountain thrown in, otherwise I'll probably have to skip it. I just don't think I can justify the extra expense.

What is a slipper basket?

some people put out a basket with slippers or flip flops or something for their guests to put on if their shoes hurt their feet...

personally I've gotten in the habit of always bringing socks in my purse to anything like this so I can dance the night away pain free... and there's nothing wrong with just dancing barefoot!
