What brands and how much food is adequate for a puppy?

Original post by LImom

Scooby wasn't that great an eater when I got him 4 weeks ago and now he's gotten worse the past week or so. He's on antibiotics for giardia (a parasite). I didn't think to ask the vet is this could be the cause of him being so fussy.

How much food should a four month old Maltese be eating at a time? The vet was a little vague - a handful of dry food and a spoonful of canned three times a day. I've tried two brands of dry (Eukanuba and another one that came with him) and 3 brands of soft - Iam's, Nutra Max and Cesar's from the supermarket. Cesar's is the only one he liked but the vet said it wasn't as good as the others.

How much do you give a puppy and what brands work for you? Did you have to change brands to find what your puppy liked?

This is really bothering me so I am looking forward to your responses.
Thanks.

Whats wrong w/ Science Diet? Thats what I give Chewie.

oh im sorry, switch now though! science diet is crap. i think its actually like the worst food out there.

Wow, that is the first time I heard that... my vet actually recommended it for my MiniPin, but I thought it was overpriced.

What makes it so bad? does it have ash or something?

you have a MiniPin?!?!?! So do I !!!!! I dont remember exactly what it was. I heard a vet recommend it once because the cat had an easily upsettable stomach. I will reaserach it. I think it was because it has all 'BI' products, no actual meat..... ive ONLY heard very negative things about it,.

im researching it now. heres a paragraph i pulled off a site:
Another thing to think about when reading labels is that the ingredients are supposed to be listed in weight order. However, 'creative' labeling does occur. For example, the Science Diet Lamb Meal and Rice kibble shows Lamb meal first, so you might think that there was more lamb than any other ingredient. Well..... note that the second, third and fourth ingredients are brewers rice, rice flour, and rice gluten. It is quite possible that there are more substandard rice derivatives in this product than lamb

We use an all natural no by-products food called Nutro. It comes in the purple containers for puppies!! He loves it and it makes him regular, my FMIL is an all-natural / organic freeek! As long as the puppy likes it, I can't complain!

When Tinkerbell had her first litter I fed them Nutro (or nutro max, although i dont know the difference) its good puppy food. i think she MAY be pregnant again, and if so the pups will have that again. (mine was the green bag)
