What did YOU learn in school?

What did YOU learn in school?

Just a few things that I learned:

#1 in elementary school. I had a sub and she gave us a 'pop quiz' with all of these ridiculous things on it - like get up and spin around or write your name on the board. So most of us were running around like lunatics. But a few people were just sitting there so of course I thought 'WOW i am so ahead of them' Turns out - that the directions said 'Write your name at the top and read all of the questions, but don't do anything else'
I think of that every time i am tempted to just skip reading the directions for stuff.

#2 in JHS - I was always smart but never had to work until i got to the 'regents'(sp?) classes. I figured I would catch up when it was time to study for the test but i was so lost. We had a pop quiz and it was the first and LAST test i ever failed. I cried hysterically in the class and had to be excused - after that I was ALWAYS prepared test or no test - nerdy i know, but i was always top of my class!

#3 in HS - we had to do a report on advertising. I learned SO MUCH from this report. I learned that when an ad says 'pearl protein complex' that doesn't really MEAN anything - they just mix some stuff together and trademark the name so you sit and think WOW pearls. . . i HAVE to get that. If you really listen to any ad they arent really saying anything . . . and it really affected me as a consumer. I am skeptical of every ad.

Did you learn anything useful in school?

High School:
It doesn't matter what people think of you. Cliques are dangerous - and pretty useless.

Rumors are powerful things.

Sex is a weapon (by either having it or withholding it). My virgin asss got screwed by a 'friend' who made it her job to sleep with people that I liked. Which leads me to....

Learn how to keep secrets (your own or your friends) or stay silent and know when to open your mouth.

If you had three bottles of beer and tried to take away one of them, I bet you would know how to count then.

TINEASTIC
Talk is not everything, and sometimes talk is cheap.

I also learned not to walk on the subway grates in my short Catholic School skirt.

I learned that if you can’t dazzle people with your brilliance you can just baffle them with your Bullsh*t (Props Mr. Morrison)

Triskaidekaphobia is the irrational fear of anything associated with the number 13

Magenta is pronounced Muh Jent Uh – not MAG NET UH and Goethe’s name is not pronounced at all like it looks.

Nauga’s (as in Naugahyde) are not real animals. That was a ROUGH lesson.

Simple math doesn’t make sense and that complex and chaos math are far more interesting and much more fun.

“Dirtbags” and “Losers” can be incredibly smart and are almost always more interesting and more artistic than jocks and cheerleaders during high school. The jocks and cheerleaders can catch up once they realize it isn’t all that important to be liked.

Chisenbop – you can learn your nine times tables by using your fingers ( ex: if you want to do 3 x9, put all ten fingers in front of you and fold down the 3rd finger… the fingers before the 3rd are the first number and the fingers after it are the 2nd number of the product. So… 2 & 7 – 27.)

I learned that anything less than a 90 was considered failing by my father.

I learned that some of my favorite teachers were the ones that didn't challenge me. And the ones I despised were the ones that didn't let me get away with anything. I should thank those b@stards, because they're the ones that helped me the most.

I learned that just because an adult is in a position of authority, doesn't mean they have your best interests in mind. Some of them are burnt, bitter, and just waiting for retirement.

I learned that a variety of factors can conspire to allow a dyslexic person to think they are stupid because no one ever diagnosed them. And that once that one teacher realized what the problem was, the whole world can change.

My sister and I fought like cats and dogs at home. But the one year we were in the same high school, there were two seperate incidents where we became fiercely defensive for each other. I learned that you don't f*ck with family, especially fiery Irish redheaded sisters, even if they say they hate each other.

I learned that the scariest, most frightening things you can do teach you the most about pride and bravery when you overcome them.

i STILL do the nine times tables like that - my uncle in italy taught me when i was in the second grade. I was the only kid who learned the nine times table before any other!

and i learned that anything less than 100 was something to be ashamed of. . . i learned that in kindergarten

Re: What did YOU learn in school?

Always know a little bit about everything so you can talk in almost any situation.

A strange, eccentric English teacher with a PhD in English who celebrates Shakespeare's bday each year and named her daughter Lydia Bernhardt b/c the 2 words were the most beauftiful combo. in the english language [like she knew one was a noun or adverb stuff...she was WACKY] told us that. So far, it has worked. i may not know everything there is to know, but i've worked hard to know tidbits so that i can speak with random groups of people and participate in the conversations as opposed to saying nothing.

One day in elementary school we had a sub. He wrote the letter 'a' on one end of the blackboard and 'lot' on the other end. He then sat at the desk and said ' 'a lot' is two words. I hope I taught you something today.' He then proceeded to sit at the teacher's desk and read for the rest of the day. I never spelled a lot like 'alot' again.

In grammar school our library teacher taught us that 'dessert', the food, is spelled with two s's because you want more than one and that 'desert', the arid area, is spelled with one s because you don't want to go more than once.

I learned that as much as I wanted to be cool and not just smart, it was impossible for me to accomplish this because, at heart, I am still just one of the smart kids and it showed because most of my friends were the smart kids, though I didn't know they were the smart kids when we were friends. As a sophomore and jr, I was friends with jr's and sr's who weren't cool, but they were going to schools like Barnard (I had no idea what this school was), MIT (who wants to learn about technology?), and Cornell (why would anyone go somewhere colder than NYC?). Now I wonder what they are doing and where they are and I realize that cool is only relevant when you are younger, and that cool fades, just as beauty does.

I learned that you can be popular and still have a bad reputation - happened a lot at my school.

I learned that I just suck at phys ed. But in the last few years I've learned that it's not really a phys ed problem, I'm just not good at physical team sports.
