#1 in elementary school. I had a sub and she gave us a 'pop quiz' with all of these ridiculous things on it - like get up and spin around or write your name on the board. So most of us were running around like lunatics. But a few people were just sitting there so of course I thought 'WOW i am so ahead of them' Turns out - that the directions said 'Write your name at the top and read all of the questions, but don't do anything else' I think of that every time i am tempted to just skip reading the directions for stuff.
#2 in JHS - I was always smart but never had to work until i got to the 'regents'(sp?) classes. I figured I would catch up when it was time to study for the test but i was so lost. We had a pop quiz and it was the first and LAST test i ever failed. I cried hysterically in the class and had to be excused - after that I was ALWAYS prepared test or no test - nerdy i know, but i was always top of my class!
#3 in HS - we had to do a report on advertising. I learned SO MUCH from this report. I learned that when an ad says 'pearl protein complex' that doesn't really MEAN anything - they just mix some stuff together and trademark the name so you sit and think WOW pearls. . . i HAVE to get that. If you really listen to any ad they arent really saying anything . . . and it really affected me as a consumer. I am skeptical of every ad.

Word.
Right back atcha girlies
One day in elementary school we had a sub. He wrote the letter 'a' on one end of the blackboard and 'lot' on the other end. He then sat at the desk and said ' 'a lot' is two words. I hope I taught you something today.' He then proceeded to sit at the teacher's desk and read for the rest of the day. I never spelled a lot like 'alot' again.
That is a GOOD lesson. I don't do the 'alot' thing either, because someone who I disliked intensely corrected me on it years ago.

Re: What did YOU learn in school?
In 4th grade we had a sub, and she asked us how many pairs of presidents had the same last name. The class guessed 3, and she said they were right, and asked if we knew who they were.
One kid said, 'Adams - John Adams and John Quincy Adams.' The teacher said, 'very good.'
Another kid said, 'Johnson. Andrew Johnson and Lyndon Johnson.' The sub said, 'yep, that's right.'
A third kid said, 'Roosevelt - There was Teddy Roosevelt and FDR.' The sub said, 'yes! Now you've gotten all of them!'
Little me, who had the book '40 Presidents - Facts & Fun' at home, asked, 'What about Harrison? There was Benjamin Harrison and William Henry Harrison.' The sub looked at me like I had two heads, gave me an indifferent shrug, and said, 'Those weren't presidents.'
...And I learned that sometimes just because someone is in a position of power over you, it doesn't mean that she isn't kind of 'faking it'. Honestly, considering some of the bosses, college profs, even doctors, I've had over the years, it's a good memory to come back to.

i always make that one word even though i KNOW it is two words - that is one of those mistakes that when i read old posts i want to crawl under a table and die!

Just a few things that I learned:
#1 in elementary school. I had a sub and she gave us a 'pop quiz' with all of these ridiculous things on it - like get up and spin around or write your name on the board. OMG! I had the same thing in elementary school. For some reason I will never forget that one.
