What do I wear to a wedding ......

that has church at 3:30 on a sat in june and the reception is in her parents backyard? Is a sundress too informal?

I would try to find out if it's formal or not. Just because it's in a backyard doesn't necessarily mean that it's informal.

Oops sorry...the invitation reads semi-formal attire. What does that mean for the men?

I would say comfy cocktail dress with some nice summer accessories should suffice. I wouldn't know what to tell they guys to wear...is a suit too hot for an outdoor event?

ETA: can he get away with a short sleeve shirt under his suit jacket??

Cocktail dress for you...dress slacks, button down shirt, tie & sport coat for him.

I have the same sort of wedding in July. Exept FI is in the wedding and has to wear a navy suit....boy will he sweat!! I plan on wearing a summery dress but nothing too informal....probably just tea lenghth with some color....I can't see wearing black.

I think nice sundress or cocktail dress for you; maybe suit for FH, or at the least khakis and a blue jacket. But I'd say def. a jacket and tie for him, he can always take the jacket off.
