my mom and i hae found a place that's not to expensive for her in my opinion and has the mood and atmosphere that she likes.. so i think we're set..
it's an area of a restaurant.. but once we're all there.. what do we do? do folks give speeches? do fh and i announce our wedding party? what exactly happens at an engagement party?

We had a DJ at ours, so people were dancing, walking around and talking to people at other tables, etc. My FFIL gave a speech.

I was in the same boat as you! I had never been to an engagement party before mine, until a month before mine (Meggles808!)
We just had one quick speech at our party and we did a little cake-cutting thing. Our DJ made a couple 'shout-outs' to us and everyone clapped. Nothing fancy, it was just a fun night of dancing! You can do whatever you want...its your party!
We would have probably announced our wedding party if our wedding was closer and we knew exactly who was in it.

thanks ladies (i thought it was a dumb question but i needed an answer) we're not having a dj, so i guess people will just talk and giggle amongst themselves.. i might do a how well do u know the bride groom game... have a little trivia thingy on the tables..
it'd fill the time between salad and meal..

I had mine at CLM...when it started and people were arriving, there were butler passed style hors dourves, we greeted everyone as they came in, everyone was standing around talking, eating, drinking...And some people were making it to their tables. We had a dj so the music came on, people danced, then the dj announced my MOH will give a speech, after Fh gave a speech but it was a funny type of speech to his friend who he gave credit to for getting me and Fh together...then our meals, more dancing, oh the dj called Fh and i to dance a slow dance alone on the dance floor. Also cake cutting they brought out the cake to the middle of the dance floor and we took lots of pics. And then more dancing

we used it as a way to celebrate our engagement and announce our wedding date...fh made a speech..but its definately not necessary

the place offered us 12-4. i todl my mom we dont need that much time. 1-3 is PLENTY of time.. for everyone to arrive, say hello, eat, and talk and my mom to make a speech, fh will also (cause he likes to hear himself talk) then folks can leave.. lol.

We had ours at a restaurant and it was on a Sunday from 2-6 I think. 4 hours went by quickly even without a DJ. We had about 40 ppl in the room of the restaurant. there were a bunch of tables, some tables fit 4 others 6 so everyone sat where they wanted. I just had a really simple party. I did have a picture blown up and put in a frame so people could sign around the frame and I loved reading it after the party. But we didnt do 'anything' special. It was more of a get together then anything. We just had our immediate family and our BPs. We didnt invite other friends or extended families and it was really nice. Everyone had a good time and it was nice to be able to talk and have our families mingle. Honestly, I think 2 hours will be too short. Most people were leaving mine around 530ish which was fine because we had time to say goodbye and thank everyone before they cleaned up our room and made room for dinner patrons in the room. It kind of reminded me of a rehearsal dinner but without us giving gifts or speeches. Also, we only had beer wine and soda, but my dad started a tab and a few people got drinks so the tab was only about $100. Oh my dad did give a little speech when the dinner was served. Honestly, it was perfect for us. We didnt want anything too fancy because I didnt want my parents to drop a ton of money so it was perfect for us. Oh, we also only did a buffet and everyone was happy. We also gave glass LOVE coasters as favors.
Sorry this was all over the place but I hope you got a good idea of a non-DJ type of eparty!

nope not all over the place PERFECT!! i meant i told my mom 1-4 would be perfect, not 1-3.. and this is exactly what i want.. we're having sit down but i might try to find a place that does buffet. then folks are moving around and chatting as the get their food.. a little looser than a sit down and be served dinner..

we had a very simple eparty at my parents house in the backyard. it was informal attire but we had the tents, food was buffet style, but we had a waitstaff on hand to help the guests.
no speeches, just hanging out and eating. then we cut the cake and asked our people to be in our BP.
we had a great time and it wasnt anything too over the top.

First off, thank you for posting this!! I was wondering the same thing. We're having a luau eparty in our backyard. We will have music but no dj and no dance floor. I'm hoping people won't be bored and a lot of conversing and partying goes on! I think we will announce our BP...if we can decide on who we want to ask!

We did a small restautant thing also. (60 ppl) We just mingled, did a little toast (the best man was too drunk to do a toast...lol). We did a little cake cutting thing and thats it- no frills, but very nice. Everyone got to meet at least once before the wedding.

We had a dinner at a restaurant. FH made a speech to thank everyone for celebrating with us. We did not have a dj, instead had the restaurant play music from my ipod.

its up to you, what you want.
FH and i just wanted to have a good time and celebrate our engagement with friends and family. my mom wanted us to have it at a place, we really didnt want to go that crazy but my parents really wanted to do it so we agreed. we tried to keep it simple and not so much like a wedding.
We did not do speeches (although my dad did a quick 2 line toast to congratulate us). We did not introduce our BP (we still havent finalized that even now), we did have a DJ, it was biffet style dinner, we had a cake but just took some pictures with it but did not do a cake cutting ceremony type thing.
The one thing we did do was a dance, i didnt want to, it kinda just happened, but it was nice.
basically we danced all night and had great food (which we didnt find time to eat.. we were having too much fun)
but everyone is different, just depends on your tastes, likes/dislikes.

We had 120 guest (its almost like a mini wedding) and held it in a restaurant for 5 hours. Both dad & FH made a quick speech....then the waiter served our lunch while everyone mingle to each other... then FH and I mingle with the guest. Everyone had a great time....dancing/eating/talking.
Whatever you decided to do..do not forget to EAT..I was so busy mingling with our guest and was starving after the party was over)

People could give speeches --- I have seen one enegament party was an all out party DJ and everything. Mine was a bit more low-key, at my future brother in laws restaurant... we had music playing in the backround..... we ate people had a great time.... It always comes down to whatever your looking for - it is your party and your special day.

At our engagement party, my mother and stepfather along with fmil and ffil all gave speeches. Then, we ate and had music from a playlist on my ipod playing in the background. Everyone had a great time and it was so nice. I would have to agree with FALNBILL, her party was a great time.
