..........., you have come together for many reasons. You have decided that being together will enrich your lives. You have decided that whatever challenges may lie ahead for you, they can be met more easily with your shared love for each other. You know that your joy will be enhanced because of your commitment to each other. You are now taking into your care and keeping, the welfare and happiness of the one person, in all the world, whom you love best. You are agreeing to be a light and strength to each other. You are entering into an act of pure faith in which you give yourself to the utmost. Marriage is more than just an acknowledgement of existing love or an expression of hope that love will last. In marriage, people exercise their uniquely human power to shape their world according to their will. Two people may come together and come to love each other by chance. But when they marry, every day thereafter they make and act on the choice to stay together and continue to love one another.

I know people will argue this but for me the purpose of marriage is to have a family. I dont need to marry fh to prove I love him more than I love anyone else. I want to be married to have a family together, to share the same last name and for us to essentially become one.

The purpose of marriage to me is to share my life with the person worth sharing it with- to do all the things we enjoy doing and to spend the quality time with that someone for the rest of my life is pretty awesome to me. And yes, later down the road start a family.

For me, its to basically be able to have a family... kids... FH and i always say we are married by heart already and would never be with anyone else, but we wouldn't have kids without the sacrament. Maybe its our catholic/greek upbringing or his old fashioned family (or the fact that his side makes fun of anyone who gets knocked up) but it is just important for your kids to knowmommy and daddy are married... (as a teacher, ive seen plenty kids get made fun of because their parents have differnet last names)
Call me crazy but, i think its important...

someone once asked me that and i replied 'the health insurance' but thats not the reason....we want a family and both want to be young parents, so it was just right, knowing that we love each other, to go ahead and get married and be able to start a family

its funny b/c my fh says that...get a job with health insurance i dont care if u make $2 an hour haha BUT really my purpose is so i can have kids. Of course i love my fh and want to be with him forever and thats a big part of it, but i can't imagine having kids and not being married...being young and getting married is hard enough, i cant imagine having a kid and people saying 'oooh your not married?' b/c people judge and do that.

i agree that no matter what, if you arent married people will judge...its ashame and not everyone judges, but there will be some people (and they may be 'important' people) will be taken back if you have a child and are not married...but some of the best children i know were concieved when the parents werent married (my 1st nephew being the best example!)

Re: What do you believe is the purpose of marriage?
it's about a choice to build something together, to face the world as a team. there are a lot of practical things that go along with marriage that sort of up the ante on the relationship--financial union, legal union, home ownership, kids, and in many cases, a spiritual commitment--so i think it's about laying everything on the line to build a life with that person.

Health insurance for me as well, lol. But seriously to be able to have someone to share my life with, to know they are there by my side day in and day out. Someone to grow old with, take care of and to be taken care of. Also to have a family but, you dont always need to be married to have a family. I have one now, my son, and it is only goingtot get bigger now

Marriage isn't just for having kids but that is a great foundation for it. Marriage is the fusing of two people. It's two imperfect people making perfect vows. Loving, accepting, and compromising despite anothers imperfections.

FH and I have been together for over 9 years now and I would spend the rest of my life with him with or w/out getting married...but I want our relationship to be legal so should anything ever happen to either one of us, the other has some sort of rights. And at some point I would like to possibly try to have a family

Re: What do you believe is the purpose of marriage?
I think this is a very interesting, thought-provoking question.
I find the answers pretty interesting. I think that in order to understand the concept of marriage, you have to first define it. Marriage has many purposes and in this day of high divorce rates, it's important to start off a marriage and go into with a deep commitment to each other.
Marriage is the binding of two people--both spiritually and physically.
After reading some of the answers though, I kinda wonder about the person who posted that they want their relationship to be legal so that they have rights. I, personally, find that a bit shallow--marriage is hard work and if the big impetous to get married is legality, then I feel like that's starting off on the wrong foot.

First off let me just say how eloquently put! Love every line of this. For me marriage is the partnership of two people who make each other better. I am only half whole without FH and he is only half without me. I truly feel that every action, every decision for the rest of our lives will be better because we made it together, we did it together! He is the better part of me and I of him. I think that is key! To find your TRUE soul mate, the one you cannot live without, the one who makes you better than you could ever be on your own. For me marriage is finding the person who completes you and then giving 100% of yourself, for the rest of our days. To allow someone to live inside your heart and be more significant and more valuable than any other love in your life.
