..........., you have come together for many reasons. You have decided that being together will enrich your lives. You have decided that whatever challenges may lie ahead for you, they can be met more easily with your shared love for each other. You know that your joy will be enhanced because of your commitment to each other. You are now taking into your care and keeping, the welfare and happiness of the one person, in all the world, whom you love best. You are agreeing to be a light and strength to each other. You are entering into an act of pure faith in which you give yourself to the utmost. Marriage is more than just an acknowledgement of existing love or an expression of hope that love will last. In marriage, people exercise their uniquely human power to shape their world according to their will. Two people may come together and come to love each other by chance. But when they marry, every day thereafter they make and act on the choice to stay together and continue to love one another.
What do you believe is the purpose of marriage?

After reading some of the answers though, I kinda wonder about the person who posted that they want their relationship to be legal so that they have rights. I, personally, find that a bit shallow--marriage is hard work and if the big impetous to get married is legality, then I feel like that's starting off on the wrong foot.
Did I say marriage was just about rights?? I've been with FH for nearly TEN years - we would like to start a family at some point AND I'd like to know that should something happen to me that he will have some sort of legal rights. I know too many people that did not get married after YEARS and YEARS together and ended up having situations that they would have been spared had they been married. Plus, I know many people involved in gay relationships that suffer from not having rights from marriage. I don't think you should be on here judging people saying that they are shallow when you have no idea who any of us are.

I think this is a very interesting, thought-provoking question.
I find the answers pretty interesting. I think that in order to understand the concept of marriage, you have to first define it. Marriage has many purposes and in this day of high divorce rates, it's important to start off a marriage and go into with a deep commitment to each other.
Marriage is the binding of two people--both spiritually and physically.

you seem to be ignoring the fact that--in some ways for a couple who has been together for a long time and maybe doesn't need marriage necessarily to make a life-long commitment--the union is a bit of a formality without the legal ties. i agree with you about spiritual union, but spirituality is very personal. this assumption that her point of view is shallow shows a somewhat narrow perspective on relationships. there are people out there who have successful, loving, life-long relationships and never get married.

Re: What do you believe is the purpose of marriage?
i think that the purpose is anything you both want it to be, if we all shared the same preferences, we'd all be alike. There is no right answer..which makes it special between the both of you
to judge on this question is making it look like your beliefs are the only right answer

How is wanting to get married bc you want to have your relationship legalized shallow??
I could see if she said she wanted to marry him bc of his money, hot @ss, hot car, etc. but that is not what she is saying. I think Celete's point was missed.
