I don't know what to do with them. Most libraries and goodwill won't take them.

Maybe you can sell them on EBAY, or Half.com or Amazon, or livedeal.com
Instead of throwing them out, you may as well make some money on them...Or buy a book case and display them.

I know on LI there are used book stores where you can hand in your books and get store credit (maybe even cash)

We keep our old books, or if it's a book we really loved, we give it someone for them to read and pass on.

I will not throw out books- I think it is terrible to do that.
I have bookshelves FULL.....
I thought about selling them on ebay or something but to be honest, is the money worth having to deal with shipping them?
I don't know why libraries won't take them- I guess they already have enough?

As a librarian, I think I can answer your questions.
I work in a large system, and our policy is to accept all donations. Whatever we don't process for our collection we try to sell in our booksales. Whatever doesn't sell is discarded.
We do try to encourage the patrons to donate only books in good condition. (we've received some pretty nasty books. Ex. smelly, yellow and dusty)
Maybe try donating the books to nursing homes and hospitals.

When I moved into Dh's last year - I called up the local nursing home and hospital and were pretty much begging them to take them!! They gave me such a runaround - I do'nt get it!! I ended up putting them by the elevator on my floor (I was living in an apt building) with a sign that said 'Help Yourself - Please Read Me' - about two hours later I saw them out on the street in the rain which meant one of the supers dumped them out there. I was sooo pissed!!![]()
I think it's a crime to throw out books!!

Back in San Antonio, there was a place who would take your books from you and give you 'credit'. Not full amounts but some change back if you will depending on the popularity of the book and it's condition.
I used to LOVE that store! Whatever books I read but weren't impressed with I'd take there. Whatever book I was curious about but didnt want to pay an arm and leg for, I'd buy there. You have NO IDEA how expensive medical books are.
When I left SA, I gave a LOT of my books away. I always had hardbacks and complete series. It was so hard.![]()
Im back at over 200 books again. I keep them, re-read them or lend them.

Catalog them in a spreadsheet then pack them up and store them for now.
When I get my place I usually line a room with bookcases and put them all up by genre.
I like to browse my books. Plus I like to think you can tell a lot about a person by the books they keep.

Then I am in trouble because I have mostly horror books, murder mysteries or detective books.
