What do you recommend for low salt diet foods?

DH had very slight high blood pressure at the DR visit so I need to shop today asap for foods for him.

My dad owned a health club for 15 yrs & he is a nutritionalist but I don't want to wait till he's up to call him.

My father went through that last year. Now he eats tons of fruits and vegi's and they shop at trader joe's and places like that. They carry many of the same items as regular stores only low salt. Mostly fish chickena dn turkey, hardley ever red meat.

Re: What do you recommend for low salt diet foods?

definatly stay away from soups (960 mg of sodium), and tv dinner type foods. They are all loaded with soduim.

(ya know I had to go to my kitchen and read the labels)

Re: What do you recommend for low salt diet foods?

Jenn...,my father has been on a low salt diet for over 10 years niow. He had a heart transplant and the doc told him to watch what he eats. As a result I grew up in a house where everything is low salt. Back 13 years ago, there werent very many low salt things and what there was was very expensive. My mom cooks with lots of spices (make sure you check the spice combos - they tend to have salt in them) She uses Mrs Dash on EVERYTHING!! We should own stock in the company the amout of Mrs Dash that we buy!!

We buy onlu low salt canned tomatoes, they even have low sodium grated cheese.
Have John stay away from processed foods...like cold cuts, canned soups (there are some that are low sodium), any frozen dinners.

No one says that low salt/sodium has to be BORING!! Like I said, use different spices to make the food tasty!!!

Re: What do you recommend for low salt diet foods?

All fresh foods - NO SOUPS - my FH's father has HBP so FH was told to be careful and eat with low sodium.

He cooks everything fresh - you can't eat prepackaged food (at least very rarely) b/c they are almost very high in sodium.

Also tell him to stay away from egg whites - apparently they are high in sodium

Re: What do you recommend for low salt diet foods?

Mrs. Dash is the BOMB! I put that on everything!!

Stay away from butter sprays, soy sauces, cheeses are high in sodium. Leave it to me to list the obvious.

Buy SALTLESS pretzels and popcorn if you eat that!

Re: What do you recommend for low salt diet foods?

i agree with checking out trader joe's. i believe healthy choice foods also are low in sodium. check the labels when you shop, there are many low sodium alternatives to regular foods. good luck!
