I'm a vegetarian, so we were considering having an all or mostyl vegetarian wedding. It woudlnlt be boring stuff. We'd like to find a caterer who can make creative, yummy dishes!
What would you think as a guest? Would it not be your tastes? Would you think it was cheap? Would you think it was interesting? Would you just be glad the couple was expressing their own tastes?
Thanks!

Re: What do you think of a vegetarian wedding?
I would personally be fine with all vegetarian at a wedding but many people would be annoyed (and hungry) if there isnt the usual chicken, beef, etc. Could you have both? Meat for the non vegetarians and vegetarian plates for the others??

The thing with the all meat wedding vs the all veggie wedding is. At an all meat wedding, some people can't eat anything, at an all veggie wedding, everyone can eat everything...and most weddings ARE like that, they're basiclaly all meat, with maybe 3 things I cna eat at cocktial hour, if that, and I have to ask if there's a vegetarian dish (it's never on the menu), and it's usually just a plate of the side dish vegetables..i think that's worse....on one hand it's something everyone can eat, and on the ther hand it's something some people can't eat.
at an all veggie wedding, everyone can eat everything.. this isnt true my fh is allergic to most veggies so aside from potatoes and maybe a few green beans he wouldnt be able to eat anything
i think you need to have a balance where there is something for everyone it shows consideration for your guests
but that is just my opinion

Re: What do you think of a vegetarian wedding?
I went to a wedding about a year ago and they did about 70% vegetarian. Keep in mind it was at Tappan Hill & Catered by Abigail Kirsch soo...it wasn't cheap but IT WAS AMAZING. I am not into veg. food at all - went to Zen Palatte & had water all night if you know what I mean.
The way they did this was great. First, they did not say this was a 'vegetarian reception' or it would have turned everyone off - especially me. I went expecting the norm & was pleasently surprised. The B&G (and a lot of their veg. friends) had very serious issues with meat that was too 'flesh' like. To start with they eliminated the carving stations & antipasto. The CH had tons of passed HD & stations & they were so much fun. I'd say I had maybe 4 things with meat - mostly chicken & some fish. They avoided beef, pork & lamb.
For the RC they had a salad course, cheese course, & choice of 2 Veg dinners, 1 chick or a fresh water filet. No one seemed to complain or mind not having beef.
What really helped the day go smoothly was how it was all laid out. They grouped the few meat dishes together, pasta in one area, veggies in another, tofu off on it's own. It was easy to experiment & easy to find what you wanted & didn't want. They also avoided all fake meat products. There was no 'meat free chicken nuggets' per say.
If its done right - with ALOT of thought, time & care about peoples preferences - it can come out great! FM me if you want more info.

If most of your guests are not vegetarian please do not do this. My friend did this and people threw full plates in the garbage. I am not vegetarian and the food she had tasted good to me and I enjoyed myself.
However she wasted tons of money b/c majority of the 300 person reception threw so much food out. It was awful.
I felt so bad for her.
I had vegetarian options in my menu when I got married for my vegetarian guests.

OK, I thought I was done with this topic, but I find this interesting. I have never heard of vegetable allergies. I know some people can't eat seeds, but I didn't know you could be allergic to vegetables.

I went to one wedding where someone couldn't eat green vegetables, lettuce etc. b/c of whatever makes them green but I'd never heard of that before. He just asked the waiter for no greens b/c he had a medical condition. It worked out fine.

It's tacky to let people know the menu beforehand? Since when?
since forever...
I have to disagree here. I have been to weddings in CT, MA, RI, PA, NC, FL and for every wedding you had to respond with your entre course. In fact when our family in CT received my sister's invite, they were confused they didn't have to pick their entree. Same with upstate. Most other areas you need to have a count of the entree types before the wedding. Plus I don't think it is tacky at all.

I feel bad for your friend as well and if I were her I would have been seriously offended. What kind of people throw out plates of food? Were they raised in a barn?
If people can't suck it up for one day without complaining or raising an eyebrow, I personally wouldn't want them to be my friends. It's one day, one meal - people are starving in this world and it's not like they would be served poop on a plate.
What's up with 'my day, my way' and as soon as the shoe is on the other foot all of a sudden the hosts are supposed to be 'considerate' and 'sensitive' - i find this to be a tad bit hypocritial...
Everyone has preferences, likes, dislikes, whatnot...but to make a stink about something different to me is quite provincial...
I don't know why, but this thread annoys me...end of rant

i've seen it as well, it is venue dependent...

So are people supposed to eat food they don't like?
I would probably pick stuff at my plate in a veggie wedding, but if there was food I couldn't stand, it would go in the trash. Simple as that. But that goes with any gathering I guess.
I don't think people should make a ahuge stink of it and start complaining at the wedding because that is rude. But like I said before, I think if you are goingto do an all vegetarian wedding meal, alert the guests to this beforehand so they can chose whether to eat at the reception or before/after it.

yes as long as it is edible...
if i don't like something i wouldn't put it on my plate. if it is put in front of me, i eat it so i do not offend anyone - i am so surprised to hear that is not the norm...

I have eaten many things that I did not care for just to be gracious. I do draw the line at meat, but that is because I have been a vegetarian for 15 yrs and my body (and mind) would be ill if I ate meat.

Re: What do you think of a vegetarian wedding?
I think what's confusing me the most about this thread is that it seems that not everyone is aware of what array of meatless dishes exist...it does not mean a plate of potatoes and green beans.
That said, I think we've certainly given Marymoon food for thought here (sorry bad pun, couldn't help it!) A wedding reception does not have to be beef, chicken and fish if one doesn't want it to be, and if one chooses to have a lot of non meat entress, people do not have to go home hungry b/c all that was served was 'rabbit food'...rabbit food is not what eating vegetarian is all about.
But like I posted before, it might be a good idea for marymoon to consider serving a meaty fish like tuna or a simple chicken dish as a safety option, so that the creative meatless options can still take center stage, but everyone at the wedding will be able to find someting to eat.

Nobody is debating whether a veggie dish can't be made spectacular...that isn't the debate.. What if someone just doesn't like veggies period??? No matter how fancy hearty you make it???
Most people feel that you should give people options options

Yeah, see that doesn't make sense to me. If I don't like something, I just won't eat it unless I am starving. I don't eat any kind of squash or zucchini cause I cannot stand it. I also hate any type of bean, except black beans (I don;tlike the texture).
But if that is what you do, then good for you. You are definitely better than I am cause I know I would be ill.
Kiwijowonze... I don't think you get the point. No one here is saying that Marymoon must have beef, pork, chicken or anything. What I think many of us are saying is that she should have a a meat option, if only one. I suggested chicken and fish.

Re: What do you think of a vegetarian wedding?
I think that it would be interesting to go to a vegetarian wedding. FH and I are very open to different foods and are willing to try anything.
That being said, If there is no steak served at my wedding my family would revolt! I think it all depends on the guests, how many are vegetarian and how open they are to try new things. I have 1 vegan friend that will be attending our wedding and I will definitely be sure to have items served at the CH that he can eat. I have also spoken with the caterer about dinner options for him other than steamed veggies on a plate.

Yikes! This is turning way too negative!
Peace!!!!
All I was trying to point out is that not all meatless dishes mean only veggies...eggs, beans, falafels, etc are not veggies but make up a vegetarian meal. I'm not saying people have to like that either, but wanted to point it out, as it seemed based on a few of the posts that maybe some people only thought greens and other vegetables were the primary components of vegetarian dishes.

I had a vege menu for my e-party & it did not go over well.....I was really disappointed b/c the caterer was fantastic & the food was great, but people were just not that adventurous
That's too bad. It's hard for me to judge b/c I eat most things besides melon & raw seafood but I didn't realize how many people were SO anti-vegetable. I really didn't think this would get so out of hand either.
ETA: I have a vegetarian cousin who is such an unimposing vegetarian, (he never wants people to adjust their dinner menu to him) but he had any type of affair at his home or catered like a wedding, I would completely expect it to be vegetarian. OK, I'm done here.
You've all given me ideas for spin off threads now.
I was truly disappointed. I thought it would be nice for the members in my family to have the 'main entree' for once & not just steamed veggies & a potato. The caterer made agreat Tofu Tempura & this wicked rice & spicce dish that was so incredible.....but only my side at it. There was a gluten-free pasta dish as well (A primvera in garlic sauce) that was the only thing that really moved.
For my wedding I had a mixed bag of food.... the cocktail hour was mainly meat less & only a couple of things had cheese, milk or egg. No one even noticed. For the dinner we had the sit-down traditional chicken-fish-or meat

would you be 'angry' or 'disappointed' at an all meat wedding? i don't think so... you would respect the differences and kindly state you are a vegetarian, simple! what i don't get is the attitude of those who think something different and not to their liking is a 'bad' thing...it's just different!
