I'm a vegetarian, so we were considering having an all or mostyl vegetarian wedding. It woudlnlt be boring stuff. We'd like to find a caterer who can make creative, yummy dishes!
What would you think as a guest? Would it not be your tastes? Would you think it was cheap? Would you think it was interesting? Would you just be glad the couple was expressing their own tastes?
Thanks!

If the bride and grooms are vegetarians, it makes perfect sense to have a vegetarian reception.
I would just stress that the food be normal food that both vegetarians and meat eaters are used to eating. Things like starches and fruit and veggies.
I think if someone told me the menu was going to be all vegetarian, that might scare me a bit into think its going to be all bean sprouts and soy...but that doesnt have to be the case.
So my suggestion would be to go to an excellent caterer who does all kinds of food and just have them create a vegetarian menu...rather than going with a vegetarian caterer who really emphasiszes that aspect. Does that make sense?
Ditto! This is exactly how I feel.

Can the hall just make you a vegetarian meal. Because in all honesty...there is nothing like a steak at a wedding. JMO

I would be totally annoyed if I went to a veg only wedding. Definately have a veg choice or two but please don't make it veg only.
I agree!

I had a vege menu for my e-party & it did not go over well.....I was really disappointed b/c the caterer was fantastic & the food was great, but people were just not that adventurous

Re: What do you think of a vegetarian wedding?
I totally understand your wanting to share your love of meatless meals with guests...I am not a vegetarian, but absolutely love Indian dishes like chana sag (sp??) and other Middle Eastern meatless dishes (falafels!!!!! Yes!)...they can be hearty and tasty and unique, and as many people haven't tried dishes like these, it can be really fun to have them at your wedding (maybe consider a tasting menu of your favorite options, so people don't have to make a committment to any one).
But maybe just to cover the likes and dislikes of everyone, you could have a really good meaty seafood, like swordfish or a tuna steak, at the very least, just to appease the tastes of everyone. But you could still make the meatless/fishless dishes the focus.
And the other consideration is older people. i know my Grandfather just can't eat spicy foods these days...so perhaps for people who may have that problem, a more simple fish or even chicken dish...would be a familar and safe choice for people who just can't digest spices that might be more prevalent in the more exotic meatless dishes. Again, your meatless dishes could still be the focus, but this way you know no one will go hungry.
it's a great opportunity to be be experiemental and have fun and you may very likely expand the tastes of many of your guests. But I don't think it would 'ruin' the concept if you had at least one poultry dish or something...hopefully with creative thinking you can find a good solution
good luck!

I'm a vegetarian, so of course, I'd be excited to go to a veggie wedding--but I'm biased!!! Talk to Sasha96 --she did a vegetarian wedding, and would have a lot of info for you. Good luck with whatever you decide!

That's too bad. It's hard for me to judge b/c I eat most things besides melon & raw seafood but I didn't realize how many people were SO anti-vegetable. I really didn't think this would get so out of hand either.
ETA: I have a vegetarian cousin who is such an unimposing vegetarian, (he never wants people to adjust their dinner menu to him) but he had any type of affair at his home or catered like a wedding, I would completely expect it to be vegetarian. OK, I'm done here.
You've all given me ideas for spin off threads now.

Re: What do you think of a vegetarian wedding?
I would not have an issue with it at all unless the only choices were pasta, rice, etc and eggplant (allergy to it) and I don't eat potatoes, rice or pasta.
I think it could be interesting but I would not do the entire wedding as vegetarian. What about an all vegetarian cocktail hour and then all vegetarian app/salad 1st or 2nd course - then having mostly vegetarian entrees with a choice of say fish or fish and chicken.
I was very conscience about what I served as I have vegan, vegetarian, somewhat kosher (follows kosher rules just not restricts to only kosher - he eats only fish or pasta or vegetarian when out). The club told us that they would ask each person what exactly they wanted and they made it - they all had different meals that they said was wonderful. BTW my vegan and vegetarian cousins had regular food at their weddings as they didn't want to impose their eating on their families - BUT they did have MANY vegan and vegetarian choices.
I will tell you about one caveat. Do you have a lot of older people at your wedding. One thing to keep in mind is that many older guests CAN'T eat anything with seeds or certain vegetables for health reasons - Just something to think about.

I'm just trying to getideas of what people think and why. I didn't think I would get such a strng negative response and I don't really understand why.
Because... and i'll be frank...
I think one of the things people enjoy about going to a wedding is having a NICE meal. And if you are not vegetarian... you want your meat. There is no definie reason for it... thats just the way it is.
I wouldn't be 'annoyed' if I showed up and it was a 'veggie wedding'. But I would be disapointed.

Another note.... If we do the all-veggie wedding...
Then its just a matter of time before we see the 'Atkins Wedding'.
A T-bone for everyone.

Re: What do you think of a vegetarian wedding?
I haven't read all the replies.
I am answering the first post.
I would be alright with a veggie wedding. I am not a vegetarian but a lot of people mistake me for one. Chicken can be well made as can Fish and Pasta is not boring at all. Portebello mushrooms, pepper and other fantastic veggies make wild meals when cooked well.
I would think it would be more expensive to have a veggie wedding, but I'd LOVE to experience one. I'm a meat and potato girl at heart and I am always amazed all the great tasting and exciting dishes that vegetarians eat. None of the stuff I've tried would be considered 'everyday' food in my house!
I think you can do a lot with a veggie wedding. How about just offering one meat dish? Much the way others offer just one vegetarian dish?
Just my thoughts.. now I'll go back and read replies.

Re: What do you think of a vegetarian wedding?
Thanks to everyone who made meaningful comments, it really gave me a lot of sides to the issue to think about.
I'm just annoyed that people really brought things in like FH, and moral stuff, etc that really weren't part of the question. I never said I didn't want meat at my wedding because I don't feel like watching people eat meat, or because I want to punish anyone or impose anything on anyone. I don't feel the need to proseletyze people to the cause. I choose to eat what I feel comfortable eating, and I don't care what other people eat, really. I thought a vegetarian wedding would be interesting and fun and would introduce people to new foods while expressing who we are and what we're into (We're planning on having maybe sushi or a fajita station...we love japanese and mexican food). The only real moral thing is that I would never serve veal or lamb at a wedding. It didn't start as a moral 'I won't serve meat' thing., but after a lot of people seemed to say i basically HAD to serve meat, I was wondering why i should have to do that. I also think if a vegetairna meal is good, people don't even notice that there's no meat. I don't know what I'm going to do ultimately, it depends on the hall, I guess and what decisions we can come to, but it'll be definitely more than 50% vegetarian. I really was surprised by the reactions because I didn't know people had such a strong connection to eating meat. I don't really see why it is necessary, but I guess when people are used ot eating one way, they're not really ready to change it even for one meal, which is ok. I didn't think the food was so important, as long as it's good quality and there' enough of it. In thi post it's turning into a more important isseu than the couple getting married.it's funny, I'm writing this now after being violently ill because there was some kind of meat oil or something disguised in the sauce of my japanese food

Re: What do you think of a vegetarian wedding?
I'm a vegetarian(I actually had several vegetarians at my wedding), but I decided not to go strictly veggie. I had at the cocktail hour a wild mushroom station that had all veggie stuff and half of our 8 passed hors' devours were veggie. I decided against a strictly veggie reception because I know how annoyed I get when people take me to a restaurant with only one dish that I can eat. I wanted to keep my options and offerings more open and make sure that I pleased not only myself, but as many people as I could.
ETA: My DH is not a vegetarian, although he understands my position, he wanted steak. I did however not allow veal, lamb, rabbit, etc. In retrospect I feel that it was the best choice for US, but it might not be for you. You do what you both feel is right.

Honestly I don't see what the big deal is. She's not feeding these people for the rest of their lives, it's just one meal. However I am for the idea of letting your guest know ahead of time just so they won't be suprised. Good luck w/your planning marymoon I'm sure your wedding will be great with or without meat.

Re: What do you think of a vegetarian wedding?
I personally, don't like many vegetables (especially cooked!) and will not touch a shred of fish... the only thing i'd eat if it were a veggie wedding would be some kind of pasta... I think it might just be a little too limiting on your guests... I would definetly offer a vegetarian dish but I don't think I'd do the whole dinner that way, IMO :)

You had stated early on that you were against eating and serving meat which is why morals were brought up. You also said your FH does eat meat which is why he was mentioned. I sincerely apologize if my particular posts upset you.
The food is not the most important part but it is one of the bigger parts of the wedding or else we wouldn't all be throwing these lavish parties with all the trimmings. Not knowing your friends or families, I think you got a fair idea of how a 100% vegetarian wedding would go over.
