I'm a vegetarian, so we were considering having an all or mostyl vegetarian wedding. It woudlnlt be boring stuff. We'd like to find a caterer who can make creative, yummy dishes!
What would you think as a guest? Would it not be your tastes? Would you think it was cheap? Would you think it was interesting? Would you just be glad the couple was expressing their own tastes?
Thanks!

I would do an informal survey of your guests and ask them what they thought (friends, family, etc.).
I bet you will find out that many of them would not be completely happy if your wedding was strictly vegetarian.
Though I understand your point of view - you must also think of your quests, who most probably are not vegetarians. By making your reception completely vegan, you will probably make many people feel very uncomfortable as well as unwelcome.
see, i disagree here...
i think my group of friends would find it interesting and respect my wishes as long as i don't serve them dog poop. since when does a meal make one feel uncomfortable and unwelcome? it's one meal, it's what the bride and groom want, i think i would survive and not think any less of them...
while many here may not LIKE a meal (be it meat, fish, or veggies) i don't think the selection alienates people as long as there is some variety and it's prepared well.
i remember going to a dinner party of my parent's friends once where we were served cold plumb soup and some rendition of eggplant which made me and my sister literally gag. what did we do? we ATE it with a smile because it was the polite thing to do...

At the same time since her FH is not a vegetarian, some people might expect to have a choice also.
Mary, this is my last comment on this topic. Do what makes you and FH happy. I think guests should be given options, but this is your wedding. You will never be able to please everyone. If it's against your moral beliefs stand ground and who cares what people think! Good Luck.

I tried to say this before. If you want opinions, you have to expect that at least some will be contrary to what you want to hear. I think that this thread is a good indication of the response she may get from the wedding guests. While some will be totally fine and welcome the food, there will be a bunch, if not the majority, that will not be happy.
Essentially, Marymoon, you need to decide what your priorities are and make your decision that way. Ultimately though, please make sure you actually want people's opinions when you ask for them.

Re: What do you think of a vegetarian wedding?
I have a few points. One is that I have never ever heard of a catering hall serving 'steamed vegtables' and calling it a vegetarian meal...our choices are pasta dishes, eggplant dishes...tons actually to choose from....that must have been years ago or in a small non typical wedding hall...
Then the point of not eating meat being a relgious belief...out of pure curiosity...what relgion is that?
And on to my point of many of my guests being morally against eating meat on the day of my wedding, a true Catholic belief yet no-one has said they would be offended by watching others do it....In their relgious beliefs it is a sin and yet they are open with giving everyone a 'CHOICE' so why is everyone jumping on this moral bandwagon when truthfully you just dont in my opinion like being attacked by your choice of using your beliefs...i would rather hear you say that its your wedding I'll do what I want versus...I would get sick seeing others eat meat....or they are infringing on your morals and beliefs...I think thats taking it a little far into the dramatics,.......I have many vegan friends that yes get ill when they smell meat etc but your not gonna be watching anyone eat , your gonna be eating yourself and then the food is cleared.....

Re: What do you think of a vegetarian wedding?
I've got to run to the doctor, so I'll respond later, but yes, FH eats meat, but he's fine with not hvaing meat, which we discussed. We've discussed having meat at either the CH or the dinner, etc. I didn't ask for advice about what FH would think, but about what guests would think...I know what FH thinks, that was never the issue. I really was looking for opinions, I was just really surprised that they were so passionate and so against it, i didn't think ti was inconsiderate, maybe it is, I was just sur[rised by the responses..I tohought I d get 'Well, I wouldn't like it because I love meat' or 'I don't know, the vegetarian food would have to be good, not weird', or 'that would be really interesting.' I really wasn't expecting such a controversy. I'm a person who likes to hear other people's opinions, just because I disagree with the opinions you give me when I ask doens't mean I don't value them or I shoudln;t have asked. I wasn't expecting everyone to say 'go for it that would be great' either. I was really wondering.
Most of my guests know I'm a vegetarian and that together, as a couple, FH and I are vegetarian, even if he eats meat on his own (if that makes sense). As in, our dinner parties will always be vegetarian, etc... I don't think one meal counts as 'imposing' anything...
Its also kind of like this... are all of your guests close to you and FH? Or are there alot of people there who you have barely ever met?
If they are close to you then they will understand, it wont be a surprise that there is no meat there and they wont complain because they love you and just want to share in your day.
BUT- if there are neighbors and 10th cousins and all that then there might be 'grumbling'. After living with my FI for 4 1/2 years who WILL NOT touch a salad, beans, or really any vegetables, I know how much pure meat eaters hate veggies. I have to cook 2 meals sometimes!
All in all, I think you should do what you want but thats up to you and your FI.

Re: What do you think of a vegetarian wedding?
Also, it was never an issue of watching/seeing anyone eat meat. I never proseletyze, I never EVER try to tell anyone to be a vegetarian. It's my choice. I go to plenty of dinners and there are people around me eating meat and I deal with it, that was never the issue. the only time I mentiond emat ebing around me sickening me was in regards to my own home, which is a separate issue and my prerogative. The issue is not and has never been about me not wanting to watch people eating meat.
Also, just because something isn't a part of the dogma of an organized religion, doens't mean it isn't a closely held moral belief, it could be religious. There are orthodox jews who believe that god wants all people to be vegetarian b/c adam and eve only ate meat AFTER they ate the fruit, etc...My beliefs are my own, and if I hold them as closely as someone else holds keeping kosher or no meat on friday, then that's definitely up to me. I have no problem giving other people the choice...but it's about what i serve/condone. It isn;t even neccesarily about that. Initially it was just a stylistic question, not a moral one, a ';waht do you think?' jsut like 'what do you think about this centerpiece?' or 'what do you think about hvaing an MC and a DJ?' etc., or more curentlky, what do you think of having a slow entrance song for the BP...

Re: What do you think of a vegetarian wedding?
my ex-roommate and her now husband are indian and, for religious reasons, their whole weekend full of wedding festivities was with vegetarian food. it was fabulous!! i am a huge carnivore, and so is fh, but we both really enjoyed the vegetarian food.
imo, if you have enough variety, people won't even miss the meat. plus, it's your wedding and i think you should serve ONLY what you're comfortable with!!!!

I agree with you there, I think that it was a stylistic ? and it got blown out of proportion, and it may not have been you that said it was a relgious belief but thats when it started getting serious to me and I start asking more ?'s and it gets carried away.... Im sure you'll have a great wedding no matter what you choose....

Re: What do you think of a vegetarian wedding?
I think you need to do what you feel is best for you and your FH. If you are both in agreeance with having a full vegetarian menu at your wedding - go for it.
For us, I'm vegetarian and FH is not. I wanted a full vegetarian menu but we couldn't agree on that - for a lot of the reasons that were stated. In the end, we are having 4 entree options - beef, chicken, fish and vegetarian...NO carving station and lots of vegetarian options for the CH.
In the past, when we've thrown parties, they have been completely vegetarian and everyone raved about the food - couldn't believe there wasn't any meat and that it was all so good. (Which were odd comments to hear, but I digress.)

I have been to 4 occassions - 3 weddings and 1 80th b/day (in a hall) - in the past year, where I was served nothing but bland vegetables on a bed of dry, sticky rice as my ENTREE. Don't dismiss something simply b/c you haven't experienced it.
There are several religions, but Seventh Day Adventists is one religious group that does not eat meat.

Re: What do you think of a vegetarian wedding?
Okay, there's being defensive and there's saying 'I don't understand that POV and this is why'...so maybe someone can answer me and say 'oh, it's because of this.'
I'm defintiely not trying to put anyone down... I'm really just trying to find out why people think the way they do because I was suprised, there were some really passionate responses to it rather than 'oh I wouldn't really like it'...it was 'you can't impose your morals on anyone else' etc etc.
I'm not trying to punish anyone at all. I'm not tryint to impose morals. I really asked initially because I thought it might be something that would at once reflect who I am and what I believe and be something unique and interesting. I really didn't think I would get intoa discussion about morals, but about personal taste, etc..
ETA: It does reflect both of us. FH only eats meat occasionally now. I turned him on to a lot of vegetarian food, and ugh..once again, I read back...people keep bringing FH and other things that were SO not part of the original discussion...ok I'm really gonna go to the doctor now
