What do you think of a vegetarian wedding?

Original post by marymoon

I'm a vegetarian, so we were considering having an all or mostyl vegetarian wedding. It woudlnlt be boring stuff. We'd like to find a caterer who can make creative, yummy dishes!

What would you think as a guest? Would it not be your tastes? Would you think it was cheap? Would you think it was interesting? Would you just be glad the couple was expressing their own tastes?

Thanks!

Ladies, this seems to be turning someplace we probably don't want to go...

I still want to be a size 6 for my wedding. I know that has nothing to do with this conversation, but I figured I would throw it out there.

I don't have any 'moral opposition' to eating veggies. I just despise the taste. But at my wedding, I did have many vegetarian options for those people who don't eat meat.

My mind is definatelt open which is why as someone who hates
vegetables and does not eat fish i am not limiting my guest to my
likes, my dislikes nor to my moral values!

All i am saying is give people an option...so they don't starve

ETA..and as someone who is of the minority (for whatever reason)
i would think that as a vegetarian you would empathize since you are usually limited
yoursel

i am not a vegetarian but would view this type of reception interesting and unique. as a host i would elect to provide the broadest range of options for my guests, but as a guest i would NEVER 'complain'...

I apologize...i was not directing the comment to you but using
what you said to make a point

And i agree. i wouldn't complain but as a guest i would be annoyed...no that is not why i am there but
i am saying it to give inside as to what a potential guest might think
coming to an all veggie weddin

The beginning of your post got me - yes you are a vegetarian but FH is not. This is his wedding too. Isn't there some way to compromise so that you both are happy? From reading through the thread you mention that your FH will still eat meat, IMO you both should be represented.
It's been done before in different ways - we let the DH pick the entrance song, pick the cake, etc.

Let me ask you this: How receptive do you think your guests will be to a vegetarian wedding?

If I were one of your guests, I would n't be adverse to having an all veggie menu. I don't think there is anything wrong with that. It would seem that if it weren't that way you would be going against your beliefs.

Although this is not the same thing, I don't eat pork, neither do my parents, so there will be nothing on the menu that has it. Even though I know most of my guests (and FH) love it. I don't think anyone would be bothered by not having it on the menu.

But, who cares what we think. How do you think your guests would react? I'm sure you know them better than us.

Either way, if you are against serving meat, then don't.

Re: What do you think of a vegetarian wedding?

I'm really surprised by the amount of negative responses this post has received.

We are having an all vegetarian reception because I am vegetarian and by FH is vegan. We have a lot of friends who are vegetarian and vegan, but regardless, we have strong moral and religious beliefs against harming animals in any way. We do want to cater to our guests, but I personally would feel sick to my stomach if, on my wedding day, I was going against my religious beliefs by serving dead animals to my friends and family. People can be mad, but it is ONE MEAL, and they will just have to live with it, whereas I would feel guilty and horrible not only on my wedding day but for years to come.

I ate meat for many years, but I was never offended if I went to a dinner party or wedding that was strictly vegetarian. Why? Because most people don't eat meat for every meal so it didn't phase me to not eat meat for that ONE meal. I understand that it's a wedding and people want something special at the reception, but why does it have to be meat to be special? Everyone coming to our wedding knows how we feel about it, so if anyone is angry about eating pasta or something sans meat for one meal, then we don't want them there. Honestly, if someone is going to get mad about that, then they are not coming to our wedding to celebrate our union, they are only coming for a free meal and we don't need those people in our lives at all.

There have been a lot of posts about 'imposing' your eating habits on other people, but every time we go to a wedding, the bride and groom are imposing their eating habits on us. We can't eat meat [yes, CAN'T it would make us extremely sick], but most people can eat pasta or eggplant parmesan, etc. [we're having a variety of food, not just a plate of vegetables]. Sure there are always going to be people with special diets, but no wedding can accommodate ALL of the guests diets, meat or not. You do your best.

Just a warning about having only one vegetarian option at a wedding were the rest of the food is meat:
We went to a wedding a few weeks ago where the bride and groom were both vegetarian. They tried to accommodate the meat eaters, so they served beef and chicken, and there was a 'vegetarian' entree. It was 'steamed vegetables' which is exactly what non-vegetarians think of when they hear 'vegetarian meal'. Most vegetarian meals have a lot more variety than just a plate of vegetables. I have to say that the meal was horrible. We could barely eat during the cocktail hour, the salad was disgusting [a bowl of rotting lettuce] and when the meal finally came it had only 4, yes 4 vegetables that were soggy and ice cold. There were about 20+ people that ordered this meal, and the caterer obviously didn't care enough to even keep the food warm. Needless to say, the bride and groom did not even eat a thing at their own wedding! Just something to think about.

This isn't the first wedding I've been to that I couldn't eat anything. But I don't expect the bride and groom to change their whole wedding to accommodate me. If I was going to an Indian wedding than I would expect to eat Indian food, and if I couldn't eat it, then I wouldn't. If I was going to a wedding that was only serving veal, then I wouldn't eat. But I wouldn't get mad at the bride and groom for what they've chosen to serve on their wedding day. I am there to celebrate their marriage, and am honored that they wanted me to share in their day. I would never decline an invitation to a wedding because of their meal choices.

As you can see, meat-eaters are strongly opposed to not eating meat at a wedding, so you will experience a lot of negative responses from people if you choose an all vegetarian reception. I'm sure people would be opposed even if you decide to offer only one meat option, with the rest being vegetarian, because that would not be 'enough' meat, whereas vegetarians only ever get one option at most weddings.

You need to do what feels right to you, and once you've made your decision you have to stand strong. It's your wedding, it IS a reflection of you, and you shouldn't compromise your beliefs. People WILL be able to eat at your wedding, even if it's not meat.

Best of luck.

I think it would be great, personally, but I am sure there would be a few people there grumbling about 'where's the filet mignon, the chicken marsala, blah blah'.

I was thinking it could be kind of cool - there could be a middle eastern station with chummus and all kinds of amazing pita chips, olives, breads and dips
then another with asian stirfry - can have maybe tofu to add in...
could be interesting!

There could be fish sushi and veggie sushi -
The mashed potato bar (I saw that at one wedding)

Were you having an issue with the Kosher people? Maybe they can eat that!

to reinterate the point about kosher people, if it's not kosher they won't eat it. doesnt matter if its not meat. the relatives that we have who are kosher wont even eat the cheese and vegetables b/c there is the possibility that the knife that cut them was used to cut meat. just an example. of course there are people who are kosher in the home and then eat non kosher when out. but thats a whole different debate LOL!

But her fiance is not even vegetarian so that the reception represents the moral beliefs of the couple do not apply to this situation.

Like I said in my post, I have been at weddings which were all meat, and I could not eat anything. No, I am not offended by what other people choose to eat, but when I am feeding my guests, I will not serve it to them.

So when you were the guest at this all meat wedding
were you not disappointed that there wasn't at least one plate of something
that you could munch on???
since you probably have been not eating for about 6 hours or so?

Re: What do you think of a vegetarian wedding?

I would do an informal survey of your guests and ask them what they thought (friends, family, etc.).

I bet you will find out that many of them would not be completely happy if your wedding was strictly vegetarian.

Though I understand your point of view - you must also think of your quests, who most probably are not vegetarians. By making your reception completely vegan, you will probably make many people feel very uncomfortable as well as unwelcome.

Infact, if we (my husband and I) got invited to an all vegetarian wedding we probably would not go. I know for sure that my husband would complain all through the wedding.

From what you have written, to be honest, it almost sounds as if you want to punish everyone at your wedding for all the weddings that you have gone to that did not have an abundancce of vegetarian entrees.

You must admit that being a vegetarian puts you in the minority, so why would you want to punish the majority of your wedding guests who do not have the same preference that you do. Sound a bit selfish.

It means that I have to leave early because I have low blood sugar and I pass out when I don't eat, but so it goes. I'm not disappointed because I EXPECT that they will probably not take my diet into consideration, and I can't expect them to be able to please the meat eaters, vegetarians, vegans, and all the various food allergies there are with one meal. They are not having a wedding reception to please me, and I am happy that I witnessed their marriage.

I think I am really lost on this thread. Since when is eating vegetables a BAD thing?
Eggplant parmigian is delicious. So is tofu stirfry.

ETA: BTW, I'm not a vegetarian.

So i am going to assume then you WOULD be disappointed that you would have to leave this reception due to the
fact that there was nothing you could eat

I agree that eggplant parm is yummy! IMO, I think the only time eating veggies is a bad thing is when someone is literally trying to cram THEIR beliefs down your throat! The only thing I don't understand about this thread is why the surprise over the so-called negative responses. They aren't negative, they are opinions... the first line of the post is 'what do YOU THINK' which inherently is asking for an OPINION.... unfortunately for the vegetarian, most of them were meat-eating opinions since (like it or not) MOST humans do eat some kind of meat.... Mmmmmm....eggplant parm....
