I am not sure how I feel about this. My FMIL brought me this picture and told me that she thinks she wants a dress like this for the wedding. SHe has a beautiful body, but I am thinking this is a little too much. What do you guys think? Am I over-reacting?
eta: i have to resize the pic... eta (again): i cannot seem to get the pic to work. It is the Julia Roberts Oscar dress (not the black and white one) -- champagne color, Armani, plunging neckline...

If she can pull it off, she should absolutely wear it! There is nothing inappropriate about it!

i think she would cause too much attention in a dress like that, and u don't want that...the attn should be on you... its ur day, not hers!

I don't think I'd want my FMIL to wear it but then again neither she nor I have to body to pull it off & I'm sure that makes a big difference!

Do you feel that she would overshadow you if she wore it? Of course, it's NOT white and you will be THE bride no matter what. If she can pull it off--not look tacky--then I say what the hell? It's the perfect color for a mother-of-the-_____ and it is a gorgeous dress. How does FH feel?

If she has the body to carry it off, I think it could look classy. I have seen much worse!!!

I'd think that's a but much. Looks like she's trying to outshine your mom and maybe you.

There's nothing wrong with her wearing that gown if she can pull it off. I agree there are probably more subtle choices she could make as a MOG but you know what, could be worse...at least it's not an ivory wedding gown!

It's a very nice dress, but I don't think it says 'mother of the groom' to me. If she was going to the oscars that would be one thing, but for a wedding...I don't really think so. There are some more traditional dresses that are very nice. I think this one is too flashy...in more ways than one. Sorry, JMO
I have to agree. All eyes should be on the bride that day - not the MOG showing all.

I don't think you're overreacting. It is a bit much but if she can pull it off, I say she should go for it. It does look like a dress that's not very forgiving, though.

It's a nice dress, but a little low cut.

I think if the neckline was a little less plunging it would be good.

Re: what do you think of this as a MOG dress?
I actually don't think it's that low cut, so I would say it's fine. In all fairness, since your mother has passed, she probably feels like she is the second most important woman of the day and she wants to look the part. The type of reception you're having also plays a part. If it's going to be casual, then that dress may not be appropriate just because it's very dressy. If it's a formal affair I think it's fine. And you know what, I wouldn't worry about it until she atleast tries it on. It's one thing to see a nice dress in a magazine and it's another thing to try it one and see how a 'normal' person looks in it.

I think it is a little over the top for MOG- is she trying to steal your thunder, or does she just want to look good? For me, I don't know if it would be worth arguing over, but I don't think you are overreacting and if I were you, I would prefer she wear something else.

Wow! I have a OK body(size 6) and I like flash but I don't think I would wear it! But, it is not worth getting into it with her. Maybe it is how she wants to portray herself. Her friends will know it is her and yours will form their own opinions (under their breath). Just keep your relationship on the good side and let her make her own mistakes. She will be what she will be and fighting about this is hardly a way to start a good relationship. By the way maybe you might tell her about this web site! My daughter told me about it and I'm as addicted as she is! Is that bad????

um....I think it might be a bit over the top for a wedding, especially her son's wedding....JMHO
Is there any way to adjust the neckline so it is not so low???
