What do you wear as a guest to an evening wedding?

I must say I am shocked at what I see people wearing to evening weddings lately! It's not a freakin barbecue people!!!! I do not think it is appropriate to wear a summer dress and sandals to a formal evening wedding? Am I wrong? What is going on here?

What do you wear to weddings? When did they stop being formal? Afternoon affairs are a completely different story in my opinion.

For an evening wedding I would wear heels w/a long dark dress most likely. Any wedding I've been there is always someone who doesn't quite get that it is a fancy affair. I've even seen someone in jeans for a saturday night wedding!!

definitely a formal dress, not necessarily long, but formal. with high heels.

here's the run down on my attire for the past couple of years at fancy weddings:

Knee lenth, red beaded dress with fancy black sweater

brown suit, with pretty top and neck sash

tea-length red dress, beads on hem, with fancy black sweater (yes, the same fancy black sweater as before)

black tea lenth dress with black sweater

At my wedding, which was black tie optional, I did have a couple of surprises. Tan kahki's with a coral colored top (on a male). That surprised me. Other than that, I thought all of my guests looked pretty smashing!

I have to say I've been thinking the same thing lately. My FH and I go to a lot of functions, black tie events, and parties, so I have classic, simple, elegant dresses, etc. (and yes, i TOTALLY wear them more than once!!!!)

My cusins wedding is July 1 in bayville- so I cant wait to see how people dress then.. Its a thursday night..so i will post when i get back.

I have a rule that I follow, night weddings ALWAY ALWAYS ALWAYS a LONG dress in a dark color, in my case, black. Afternoon weddings, a knee length dress. I would NEVER wear a sundress and sandals to a wedding no matter what time of day it was, unless maybe it said casual attire or garden wedding or something like that. Better to be overdressed than under. IMO.

You can't go wrong with a black dress! And if its an elegant affair, stockings are a must!

My general rule is also to always wear a long formal dress to an evening wedding. However, if the invite specifically says 'black tie optional,' I usually wear a knee length black dress with pearls. I've got a system

hi - 2 years ago my cousin got married on a thurdsay night, in August, and people dressed as if it was a saturday affair. i wore a simple black dress with heels. i don't remember seeing any one too casually dressed.

I always dress formally for a Sat. night wedding regardless of if the invitation says anything about attire. I've also noticed people dressing more and more casually for weddings. I think we're going to write 'black tie optional' or 'formal affair' to let people know that sundresses would not be appropriate.

i agree with the majority here that a sundress & sandlas is never appropriate for a formal event - unless otherwise specified, as stated before. so here is my dilemma - both me & my fh would like a relaxed atmosphere for our wedding, its in nov, so we know there will be no sundresses. how do you state that it is casual, but not jeans & sneakers?

hi!

I forgot to mention that it is a 'beachy theme'
I am going to wear a long black satin skirt (floor legnth) and a white dressy top.

I would never wear sandals or a sundress
