I think its about freakin time!

With all the things to benifit minorities its about time that the whites were allowed to start their own racist fund and be allowed to get away with it.

What really irks me is that people dont want to be racist and everyone to be on the same level but they allow things like:

Ms. Black America
United Negro College Fund
Hispanic this or that...

Why cant there be one for EVERYONE? Every race, color, religion included?

BTW - I think affermitive action is crap. People shouldnt get special treatment on basis of their skin type or gender it should be on merit alone.

ONE LOVE!

I'm not really sure how to respond to this. They 'allow'? How many popular television shows have african american's in a leading role? Aside from last year, 'Friends' didn't have one black friend - EVER. I think we live in a very white-centric society and while I agree that it's BS to HAVE to have black only shows - I think it's good for black communities. When I say BS - I mean that black majority shows whould be on mainstream television and not just relegated to the WB. What characters are there for black people to relate to? Carrie Bradshaw? Monica Gellar? Please.

As for AA - I couldn't agree more. I think it was a good thing when first created but I think at this point, it's doing more harm than good.

I also agree with everything SonicStef said.

Obviously its true that most of mainstream television is dominated by white people. But I dont believe its a racially motivated decision. Its based purely on numbers or in this case ratings. If shows with more diverse characters made for better ratings, every show in the country would have a multicultural cast. And despite it being slow going, as the country becomes more racially intergrated, so will television.

But who makes up the ratings? Is there diversity among the Neilsen ratings - do families of all races get to participate or is it just white males, 18-35? And why is the integration taking so long? I don't get it nor do I buy it. (Not you or your responses, Stef - just the 'system'.)

Aside from being a woman, no, I'm not a minority.

Re: dgtlsunshine's question. I'm not a minority. My feelings about affirmative action policies are based on my experiences teaching college students. Some of these students benefited from scholarships for minorities and are very grateful for the opportunity to shine -- an opportunity that too many of them lacked in their inner-city (or, in some cases, deep rural) public high schools.

Many of my bilingual Latino/Latina students are especially good examples of the positive effects of affirmative action. They didn't score well on standardized tests because their English/writing skills weren't as strong as those of their classmates. They also didn't always have the financial resources needed for college, which, unfortunately, gets more expensive every year (and I can assure you that the teachers aren't seeing that money, but that's another story). These are incredibly smart kids who, without scholarships and recruitment, might not have been given a chance.

Having said that, the system is by no means flawless. Some African-American students I've spoken to feel that affirmative action 'pigeonholes' them -- they say that their fellow students assume that they 'weren't good enough' to get into college on their own merits. A very hurtful situation, obviously. Which is one reason why I advocate the position I mentioned in my earlier post.

This is exactly (one of the major reasons) why I feel AA does more harm than good at this point.

From what I understand, Nielson families are modeled after the countrys population. So if the country is 40% white, 25% black, 25% latino and 10% other, then the nielson families reflect that.

I cant answer why intergration takes so long except to say that it takes many years for a country to change its mindset and thats because people OF ALL RACES are stubborn. As for tv, all i was saying is that if advertisers on a certain show has skyrocketing profits, they are not going to care who is on that show...black white or purple. They will advertise on the show. And then more networks will make more shows like it, etc.. The Cosby show which was on like what, 20 years ago now?, was a huge hit and had huge ratings and made the companies money - with an all black cast. Just like Friends is a huge hit with an all white cast. Maybe the next big thing will be a mixed cast. If its = $$$, then the networks will love it. Its about money.

I can understand the perception that there is some big conspiracy but I personally think that the world revolves around money. And if big companies thought a certain kind of show would bringthem more money, they would make more of it no matter what.

As for affirmative action, the scholarship in the CNN story is not reverse affirmative action. Its a private scholarship which is quite different. I dont have much of an opinion about affirmative action since I know minorities who dislike it A LOT and some who are in strong favor of it. Both sides have very valid points so I dont know where I stand.
