What happen if...

What happen if...

(BTW FH calls me the 'What if...' girl)

Ok, my wedding is just under 1 1/2 yrs away. I am starting to meet with vendors now. Let's say I find ones I like and want to go with, give them a deposit and sign a contract.

Then, say 6-8 months later, I stuble upon a better (less expensive or more for my $) offer than the one I signed with. How difficult is it to break a contract? What about getting the deposit back? Anyone done this?

depends on the vendor and what is written on the contract... most of the time from what i heard, if the day is re-booked with new people, you can get your depoist back. read the contract correctly. If you are saving enough money to cover the difference and are still saving money, you may have to eat the other balance.... look @ contract and call.

try to find the best vendor first before you sign. and once your done, try not to look back at it. prehaps if you like some ideas another vendor have, present them to the vendor that was already signed.

You can certainly break the contract but chances of you getting your deposit back are very slim. That's the whole point of a deposit, so you don't go elsewhere meanwhile they couldn't book anyone else.

You should read your contracts thoroughly before signing and, if you feel that you are susceptible to changing your mind later on down the road, either wait to book or don't sign with anyone that doesn't have a cancellation policy that you can deal with.

I don't really think you'll have this problem though, especially if you thoroughly research and shop around for your vendors. Once you make a well informed decision you probably won't want to change vendors and you likely stop shopping around anyway.

Good luck!

a lot depends on the vendor, some are nicer than others an will be willing to work with you. i.e. if they can rebook themselves they might be willing to give you back your others, but technically your contract is legally binding, so they are not required to giveyou backyour money. Some contracts might have a clause in them stating if you cancel within a certain amount of time, you can get a certain amount of your money back.

or you can do what I did, stop looking at vendors once you book ! that will help avoid any 2nd thoughts you have.

For all your vendors make sure you ask them what is their payment and cancellation policy. Make sure you find out what happens to the deposits if you cancel. It's okay to ask this question, and in fact you should!

Just speaking from experience, I was an early bird planner too. I did extensive research with every vendor that I am using. I found it was better to sign early because most of my vendors have raised their prices considerably. I am using one vendor that is so popular now, they have raised their prices twice all ready!!

I agree with doing alot of research. If you do that and get comparable numbers from other vendors, you will make the right decisions and not look back. Trust yourself....I know alot of people who changed their minds, lost their deposits and regretted it after the wedding!! They thought their first choice would have been better!! If you need to change, don't do it on price alone......most of the times it doesn't pay.

Thank you all.

My biggest concern is with the Photographer. I have met with 3, and think I have made my decision, but not that I am hesitant about their work or company, but I dunno, just feel like i should meet with another 1 or 2.

Thanks!

Then Im sorry to say this, but if you have doubts, then dont do it. You have to follow your instinct and if there's any hesitation, then keep on looking. You photographer is one of the most important vendors and for this reason alone, I would look elsewhere. You'll know when you find the right one!!

This is 100% true. I booked 2 catering halls before ending up with JT so it can be done. Although vendors are all different, I suggest do your research and be sure before you book, then book and stop looking. You're just driving yourself crazy otherwise girl!
