What helps w/ sharp stomach pains?

Don't want to get just any kind of medicine - not sure what works. I've had issues w/ my stomach since early this morning and now it's a sharp pain as if someone is cutting through it for a few seconds.

Any ideas? Tums? Advil?

Are you sure it is stomach? Could it be appendix?

It's the middle of my stomach area, but I need to like hold it tight and crutch down when it hurts. It's a bit on the lower side throughout the entire thing.

do u have gas? I don't know...I thikn u should go to the dr. I suffer from ovarian cysts and it sux. I think u should check out the dr.

I agree, try taking tums or maaloz first and see if pain subsides but don't wait too long. if you get other symptoms like fever, chills, etc...go to the emergency room!

I think it might be maybe from lastnight, we had these things from Trader Joe's -- chocolate w/ ice cream. We also had pizza before that (not a lot), but maybe a mix of all those things?

But it'd be different if I felt like I need to go to the bathroom, which I don't, now it's just really uncomfortable pain.

Re: What helps w/ sharp stomach pains?

One common cause of stomach pain is constipation. Apples contain properties that have a laxative effect. Drink one glass of apple juice every day to relieve stomach pain related to constipation.

Ginger contains a potent compound called 6-gingerol, which effectively kills the microorganisms responsible. Add ginger to your meals and consume every day. You can also eat ginger candy, which will have the same effect.

Taking care of yourself at home
Most abdominal pain goes away without special treatment. Be guided by your doctor, but there are some things you can do to help ease the pain, including:
Place a hot water bottle or heated wheat bag on the abdomen.
Soak in a warm bath. Take care not to scald yourself.
Drink plenty of clear fluids such as water.
Reduce your intake of coffee, tea and alcohol as these can make the pain worse.
When you are allowed to eat again, start with clear liquids then progress to bland foods such as crackers, rice, bananas or toast. Your doctor may advise you to avoid certain foods.
Get plenty of rest.
Try over-the-counter antacids, to help reduce some types of pain.
Take mild painkillers such as paracetamol. Please check the packet for the right dose. Avoid aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs unless advised to take them by a doctor. These drugs can make some types of abdominal pain worse.

Thanks V! I'm gonna see if it goes away in next hour or so - it's definately not constipation or gas, so let's see how it goes.

Do you have issues with dairy? It could be a lactose overload from the cheese and ice cream.
Any IBS history? I suffer from it pretty bad and that is the kind of pain I get and if I hold my stomach like you described it feels better.

Yeah I can't do too much dairy but it wasn't that bad, I only had like a bite of ice cream, so that's the part that's not making sense.

What's IBS?!

Irritable Bowel Syndrome- certain foods or stress can trigger an attack. I have had it since I was in high school. It totally sucks!!! I even had an attack the morning of my wedding. Totally screwed up my plan for taking pictures before the ceremony!

DO NOT take advil, aspirin or any other nsaid....it can make it worse. Try some Pepto, for me it immediately coats my digestive tract and soothes it. If you have the big D along with it, immodium is my best friend.

I have IBS too and these are the couple of things that work for me. Pepto may help if its gas as well!

Feel better!
