What if you plan on hypenating? Do you have to change everything?

yeah, any alteration of your name must be made across the board or you are technically using the name illegally!

So how is it that some people can continue using their maiden name for 'work' purposes and married name for 'social' purposes? I thought that was accomplished by hypenating

my cousin did this...she started a large fundraising group in GA...and named it 'the smith group' she got married 3 years later. ONLY in business purposes does she continue to use her maiden name due to all the contacts and what not she's made...and to make it clear who's name is on the door. her tax documents all say 'jones' now but to her contacts and clients, she's still 'smith.' you know how some people go by their middle names? like they get named homer james so they go by james because they hate homer? it's kind of like that...she 'goes by' smith even though she's really jones.
but legally she changed her name.....like jennifer aniston....she was still jennifer aniston on TV and movies and what not, but she did legally change her name to jennifer pitt.
her ALIAS became jennifer aniston.

That makes sense but then my friend at work was just told that because she changed her social security card, etc. that everything at work had to change over as well...is that correct?

It depends on the company. Some company will allow you to have a different name for purposes of non-legal documents like business cards, e-mails, etc, but you still have to have the legal name on legal documents like tax forms, etc.

Re: What if you decide not to change your name?
well, you change it at work for tax purposes...but for someone in a professional setting, it's common for women to keep using the maiden name for business....your contacts/clients get used to 'amy doe' and actually get confused and/or put off by the new chick, 'amy coolbeans' even though you are the same person!!!!
it's kind of a 'DBA' thing...'doing business as'
my company can be called super hot chicks but my actual store be called granny's country home gifts.
i marry and become jane doe, but i keep telling my clients that i'm jane smith to keep the contacts up and continue the business relationships...it's lame, but it's what women have to do sometimes.
