I think logistically speaking, no, only because then everything stays in the same name. Emotionally thought might be another issue. I know my FH would have a fit!

Re: What if you decide not to change your name?
in reality, only if you DETEST being referred to as Mrs. HISLASTNAME and if your FH/DH expected it to be changed. i know a lady who after waiting until she ws 37 to get married, was just too used to her maiden name...and so she said she'd change it after they had kids...but then they had 2 right away....she still hasn't changed it...the only issue is that people assume her name is her husband's and address things to her that way...but she just ignores it.

no it's not that I don't want to, just maybe not yet (other reasons) So FH & I wondered if that will be a hassle for me with paperwork, taxes, drivers license, etc.
Are there any documents that need to be changed?

Re: What if you decide not to change your name?
things only have to be changed if you change your name.
ANYTHING with your name on it must be changed if you do change your name.
at work insurance (car/health/etc...) car title/registration house utilities [if your name is on it] bank accounts social security drivers license professional license/credentials (lawyer/dr./nurse/teacher/CPA)
the only things you DON'T change are: your birth certificate diplomas

Re: What if you decide not to change your name?
if you plan on taking his name, then you must change all that stuff or you haven't legally taken his name...and can't actually use his name.
it will create bumps if you don't. things won't line up right...start with social security and drivers license i believe. [taxes especially...where ss# is listed..]
the marriage license won't change your name. they do ask if you are going to take his name afterwards, but that doesn't actually 'get the ball rolling' for you...you still have to go change it all after the wedding and you receive your official certificate.

Re: What if you decide not to change your name?
We arent doing anything until after the HM - we just got our passports, and I dont want to have to change the passport already - so I am hyphenating for now, not legally, and will be legally his last name, unofficially hyphenating for work....

if you don't change your name legaly, is there a problem being covered under health insurance? what about taxes & filling as couple?

Re: What if you decide not to change your name?
if you don't change your name legally, there is no problem with insurance and taxes whatsoever. as your social security number will still match your name. your FH can add you to his policy like the month of the wedding so that you are covered at the wedding date...your name won't be able to be changed for several weeks.
the thing to remember is that if you change it, you must change it everywhere. that's all.

Re: What if you decide not to change your name?
I didn't change my name. I didn't have to fill out any paperwork, and we file our taxes jointly, with our different last names.
When we went to get our marriage license, I was asked if I had planned on changing my name. I told the clerk 'no' and she indicated that on the form.

then you just go through the steps to change it when you do. you can say no to the clerk (or yes) and do the opposite later. there's no deadline.

Re: What if you decide not to change your name?
FH says he won't marry me if I don't take his name!!! I know he's half kidding/half serious, but I don't see changing it being a problem as when we get married I will just be done with school, and not like supper established where it might effect business situations. I'll only need to update my business and memo cards.

I didn't change my name either- but if you want to in the future- you are techincally going to have to get 'remarried' at the town clerk's office
I checked yes for that reason

you can say yes- and not change it- but if you say NO- then you will have to get another marriage lic- and get remarried

So the best way is to say yes I plan to change it in the future. but not on the form?

Re: What if you decide not to change your name?
If you opte to 'no' on changing your maiden name to FH's lastname on your marriage license, it may be more difficult to change your name later.
As long as you change your name due to status change, it is no problem (marriage, divorce).
Once you have your legal name (you decided NOT to change it when applying for your marriage licence!) it rolls under a different category.
Like the guy next door that does not like his lastname and wants to change it. The procedure is more complicated and you may be limited on the number of time you can do that. http://www.courts.state.ny.us/forms/namechange.shtml
