Well the higher MP you go, the whole cmaera quality is going to be better. I mean higher MP is still better, but for most people, the MP itself will be completely wasted space over a certain amount. But that is a really good point. Often the higher MP cameras are more expensive and have better over quallity

I think if you're getting canon, you should go for the rebel
rebels are nice but I wanted an SLR (i read your post after posting mine) and you are exactly right...if you got $$ go for it
MP count helps because you dont need to focus on what you want to shoot and still capture it. quaility is better also. example.. i had a 2mp camera and took the same exact shot with my 7 (i scaled it down to 2mp) and color and everything was still better. i guess at that point, you are talking about lenes and other stuff
That's why I won't buy a digi until I can afford an SLR. I want the Nikon D1000.
I recently switched from Minolta to Nikon and it was love at first shot. I spent $800 on my Nikon fi;m SLR and lenses, and I got pretty cheap lenses.

We just bought and brought back for store credit the Sony Cyber-shot- the slimline one with T7 in the model number. We were so disaapointed- the picture quality was HORRIBLE. We expected much better- I have seen cheaper cameras take better pictures. My Nikon Coolpix that FH bought me for my birthday 2 years ago was less than half of the price of the cybershot and takes pictures that are 100 times better in quality . . .
Here is a picture we took with it
and one we took with our Nikon:
The difference is NOT as obvious on here as it is on the images I have saved to my computer. I am very anal about pictures and photo quality, but we and the guy FH returned it to felt that the quality of the picture was awful . . .
I can def. see the difference. Those pics are so cute By the way..

Look on nytimes.com. Last wednesday they had a circuits special on digital photography.
Pick up an issue of Photo magazine. My mom has a fuji finepix or something. it's actually very good.
bear in mind a few things
1) 'digital zoom' is complete crap. It's a fallacy. It means absolutely nothing. All it is is cropping the photo so it looks closer, you don't get any more detail from it at all. Optical zoom is a longer lens, which gets you closer to the action and a clearer photo. All digital zoom is is like taking a piucture of a whole person, and then cropping it so it's just the head and blowing it up to full size. It just gets blurrier as you go.
2) If you want the best in optical zoom and the most versatility, if you really want to do a lot with the camera, DEFINITELY spring for a Digital SLR if you can afford it. SLRs in fi;m and digital are the most versatile and highest quality consumer cameras available. You can also change lenses on an SLR and you'll have a full size lens so you'llg et more optical zoom. Also I think this sliminiates some of the shutter delay problem you get in a compact model
3) Know what megapixels means. Megapixels doesn't really refer to image quality. Most people don't need an 8 MP camera. MP just refers to how large you cna blow up the photo without distortion. If all you want to do is post pics on LIW and print out 4X6 prints, a 2 MP will be completely sufficient. The higher the MP, the more you can blow it up. Also the higher the MP the larger the image size, so you'll need to buy a HUGE and expensive memory card, and you'll need to change it/clear it often. Plus you'll have mjor resizing to do to post online. We bought ym mom a 6MP for xmas, and I really regret it. they're so huge. they take forever to upload, forever to resize each one, and they take up a lot of space on the mem card. I wish we had gotten a lower MP camera, She's not going to be making 16X20s!
Thx. this is good to know!!

Re: What is a good digital camera?
thanks. I can;t nearly afford to buy one now...but I'll keep those sites in mind. The one thing I am looking for is an AF Macro lens for my Nikon, in case you have any leads on that. I'm trying to find a used one

Re: What is a good digital camera?
I've used Kodaks and Sony. I have the CyberShot DSC-W1 and it takes great shots. I'm actually about to put it up on eBay as I want to upgrade to the 7.2MP model. If you are interested in purchasing it, FM me. I will give you a good deal. I can also send pictures taken with it so you can get a sense of the picture quality. I'm only getting rid of it because I'm a boy and I want flashier toys...
