I did not know about it either before this site. It is a cake that you present either at rehersal dinner or some do it at the wedding (besides your wedding cake) and it is usually a theme cake. For example, my FH is a pianist and I am going to get him a piano cake to present to him at the rehersal dinner. I think it is more for the rehersal dinner if your FH is an avid lover of something (baseball team, football team).

I've only heard about it from the movie 'Steel Magnolias' (kleenex saturday afternoon movie, Grooms cake in the shape of an armadilla!!) So I thought it was something they do in the south.

Thanks girls.. My grandma said it was a southern thing, but it's coming about more in the North.. I live in Georgia and it is a big thing here.. It's a cute idea.. I'm going to do a delta plane. My FI works for delta.. and LOVES PLANES.. thats cute.. thanks.

I am from TN. and had never heard of a groom's cake before Steel Magnolia's. I think it started because the groom's felt left out of the wedding planning and feel that they have nothing of their own so we ladies decided to give them a cake and name it after them.

Is it supposed to be a surprise for the groom?

I've been to a wedding where they had a groom cake. It wasn't a surprise, the couple just wanted two cakes. Not a bad idea if you happen to fall in love with a cake that looks better small (like only serves 100, when you have 150 guests...) so you go with two cakes instead of one... here is what his cake looked like...

I thinking keeping it a surprise is a great idea--that is what I am doing!

I surprised my DH at our rehearsal dinner with a groom's cake. What I did was have his mom send me a cute pic of him as a youg boy and then I had it put onto a carvel ice cream cake which is his favorite. He was so surprised and it was hysterical to see his reaction - he had NO idea!

It is not a surprise for the Groom. Nor is it just a southern thing. My family is from Trinidad. It is also done in alot of caribbean islands. You make in the shape of something that he is interested in. Not only that but WE make it out of RUM. It is mostly called black cake( because of how dark it gets from soaking in the rum). I like it but I don't eat it as often. I will more than likely send it home with his fam. They are crazy about it.
