What is a Promise Ring?

Anyone know? I just looked at them and noticed they look like little engagement rings... is that the purpose of the promise ring?

My brother is getting the pressure BIG TIME from his g/f, but he simply is not financially able to buy her an official engagement ring or get married for that matter. But I came across this and if it means that it's a 'promise' that he wants to marry her, I might mention it to him... they are very pretty, but won't break the bank...

Anyone know?

I think it is a promise to get engaged, sort of like a pre engagement ring.

yeah - it's a way of saying we will officially be engaged soon and we are en route to marrige and engagement. Pre engagement ring pretty much sums it up

I think it is a promise of marriage sounds like a good suggestion I'm sure your brothers girlfriend will be glad you did

i got mine 6 months before i got my real ring,
mine had .10 in the center .05 on each side, and was $150. but i think they come for even less, or as just the center diamond(.10 to .20 is common)

Its like a commitment but not really an engagement. I remember when I received a promise ring from my ex after 2 years together than 5 months later we broke up. So its not really an engagement ring. Its really a nice thought though.

Thanks ladies! I emailed him my thoughts about it... hopefully he'll consider it... I understand both of their sides, so hopefully something will work out...

They have been together for 7 years! oh wait, I think 8 now! But he just finished school and she's still in school, so it's a tough situation!

We used to joke with a friend of mine, that a promise ring is when guys are afraid to really take the plunge into marriage, and they stall with a promise ring ! I just think pre-engaged is a term that sounds silly... pre-pregnant ?

Thank you Anna... in all honesty, I'm not into the whole 'pre-engagement' however, I did love the idea of the Promise Ring!

I'll keep you ladies posted.... maybe a newcomer to the boards! who knows!

Actually, my brothers been in the same boat, dating 4 years and getting pressure from us all, the usual, so maybe I can sell him on this idea

its a promise to eventually get married, and get the real thing,
if he gets it, he should give it to her in a way that she knows its not the engagement ring

My brother just got his girlfriend a promise ring. It looks just like a engagement ring, but smaller. They've been together for four years, but they are not ready for marriage, he just found a job, he's been out of college for 2 years, but couldn't get a job anywhere, so he wanted to give her something as a pre engagement ring. I thought that the gesture was so sweet.

Well after hearing all of this, I MUST try to get him to consider this... not force him of course! But I mean, 7 years? I'm starting to feel bad for her! I've never heard of this Promise Ring thing, I think it's VERY SWEET!



I forgot to add, I totally agree with the fact if he does get this ring for her, he MUST do it in a way so she knows it's not an engagement...
