What is an affidavit of freedom?

What is an affidavit of freedom?

One of the requirements to get married in the Catholic church is an affidavit of freedom. There will be 2 signed (1 for me and 1 for FH) by 2 people we know in front of a priest, bishop, or notary public.

Anyone know anything about this!??!

my FI had to get a letter of freedom from his current parish, giving him permission to marry in my parish, saying that they will publish the bans of marriage in their parish bulletin, etc. it was really informal, nothing notarized or anything. not sure if that is the same thing.

It states that you are not currently married and (get this one) not related to your FI.

I didnt have to have it signed in front of anyone though. It was just 2 people who knew us. Then we mailed it back to the priest.

The priest gave it to us the first time we met with him. One for me and one for Nick.

What did you go there for? To set the date for the church? And a few questions like your address, and stuff like that?

We already set the date a few months ago. He wanted us to come in to fill out the paper work about our parents and stuff and to tell us what else we need to get married there. AND he let us know that the fee is $550 NOT $450 like he told us the last time. He said its because we are not parishoners. Who is gonna argue with a priest!

Yea, we did all that stuff on the 1st visit so I would definately call to find out how to get the affadavit. I hear ya about the fees... it went up $50 between the time I made the appt. and when I got there. You are right, you cant argue!

For some reason he broke up everything that needed to be done into 2 visits. Oh well - I guess I have to call him again. Thanks for the info!

I had to do the same thing. Since we are getting married in my parish, the two people I wanted to sign for me had to go to church to sign it and FI was given the paper to take home, have signed, notarized and then mailed back to the church.
