Ya know, I have read about this in quite a few posts and I was wondering the same thing?

it's when the post office hand stamps the postage stamp vs. it going through the machine to print over the stamp you put on the envelope.

I used it do my rhinestone buckles would not be imprinted on the envelope smushing it

Re: What is 'hand cancelling'?

The machine that mail goes through squishes the mail. By having them hand cancel it, it won't go through the machine. A lot of people choose to do this even if it doesn't have raised things. Its in the machine that a letter is more likely to get ripped or torn.
